Maxi

Maxi is a orange/tan colored dwarf hamster with a lot of personality! He loves to be hand fed treats and enjoys gentle pets, but being picked up is not his favorite. Since being in the rescue and provided with enough bedding, Maxi has begun to dig and form burrows in his enclosure! While hamsters are crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk), Maxi often wakes up when we are near and begs for treats. We estimate that Maxi is about 1 year old. Dwarf hamsters are a solitary species and should be kept alone. They are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. For this reason, they should be kept in a room that is quiet and calm during the day. Hamsters are natural burrowers, so their enclosures should be large and deep to accommodate their natural behaviors. Enclosures with ladders, platforms, and other climbing opportunities are not suitable for hamsters. Dwarf hamsters need a minimum of 700 square inches of floor space. This equates to about 40 x 17.5 inches per hamster (larger than a 40 gallon aquarium). Their bedding should be 8 - 10 inches deep, allowing them to dig and burrow.
