My Story

Intake date: 4/13/24 Status: Available Raikou is an adult male Chinese water dragon. While we don't know his exact age, he is at least 7. Raikou came into the rescue thin, dehydrated, and with severe "nose rub" that was affecting his jaw. He had to have surgery to remove the diseased parts of his jaw, but he has healed up very well and looks better than we could have ever hoped. Raikou has a ravenous appetite and eats all sorts of insects, although his favorite are hornworms. He has some scarring from stuck shed on his back and he is missing many of his spikes. Raikou doesn't like being picked up but he can be gently petted and will take food from your fingers. His adoption fee is $50. Please see our care guide below. Water dragons are an advanced species and need large enclosures, at least 4'x2'x5'. We recommend grow tents as these dragons CANNOT be kept in glass enclosures--it's likely how Raikou injured his face in the first place. They need lots of climbing decor and a large water bowl that they can fully submerge in. Visit our care guide here: https://bewildnc.org/chinese-water-dragon/ PLEASE READ! If you are interested in adopting this animal, you need to fill out an application at https://bewildnc.org/apply/. Read the application carefully and answer the questions thoroughly. Above all, be honest! Research the species you would like to adopt in advance and consult multiple sources, we are happy to answer questions. Adopters agree to pick-up the animal in Durham within 7 days of their approval.
