This three toed box turtle is at one of our foster homes in East Bernard, Houston area.
Information from the previous owner. "Moving from southeast Texas to the mountains of CO in May of 2024. I have had Marty since a juvenile (under 1yr). He has live in a large landscaped garden habitat, with lots of mulch, vegetation and shallow water basins for soaking. Marty enjoys a daily diet of mixed berries, dark greens, hard boiled egg, tomatoes and earthworms, hand fed or on a small paper plate. He prefers to eat while hiding under the vegetation, and before the midday heat. Marty begins looking for a place in his habitat to bury for the winter as early as late October. Marty will continue feeding until early November, even though he may be active into December, depending on the ambient temperature. Water is provided throughout the year in shallow basins. By early to mid March Marty will emerge from his form and typically likes worms for a week or two before his additional fruits/veggies on alternate days. Marty is a shy turtle and likes to eat while under vegetation. He may even drag his earthworms under a plant to eat in private. Marty has lived with another, more dominant male and remains subordinate to the other male. If he is kept with other males please ensure that he is not being bullied away from his food and adjust his feedings as needed. The ideal home for Marty is an outdoor garden habitat in which he is provided shallow water year round a fed a varied diet when active (March through October). He has never lived inside and not used to handling by children. Please ensure that he is never exposed to dogs or local wildlife. Marty has lived as natural as possible while having his resources provided for him. He is approximately 13-15 years old."
Every time a box turtle comes to the rescue, we promise that animal that it will have the best care and that it will always be able to live outdoors where it can enjoy natural sunlight, dirt deep enough for burrowing in, lots of plants and other hiding places, clean fresh water, and a chance for hunting and grazing as if it were in the wild. We can't break my promise to any of these wonderful creatures, so if you choose to open your home and heart to one of them you are extending the same promise to the animal that you adopt. We search for families that can provide at least 100 square feet of space, even if they're only adopting one box turtle (but up to three can live in a space that size after careful observation to ensure they get along with one another). They must have hides, some shade, sturdy enclosure walls and a water source/dish
