My Story

Please read the description carefully. Most of your questions will be answered below. I'm a boy African helmeted turtle (sideneck) for adoption in the Baltimore, MD, area, with transportation available to Reston, VA, monthly and to York and Harrisburg, PA, weekly. My shell is 4" long and I might add another inch or two over the coming years, so I need at least a 50 gallon aquarium or Rubbermaid stock tank to call my own, with a good basking area with a heat light, heated water (around 75F), a UVB light, and a strong canister filter for the water. Right now even a large Rubbermaid tote with a screen over one end would work good for an enclosure. I'm anywhere between 5-10 years old, but can live another 10-30 years. I eat aquatic turtle pellets and an occasional treat of insects, a plain piece of cooked chicken, or boiled chicken liver. Please review care information before considering a turtle. There is a care sheet at www.matts-turtles.org. Here's a great book on aquatics, and it can be downloaded for free (even if it says North American, it's still good for most aquatics). https://www.lulu.com/shop/richard-lunsford/captive-care-of-north-american-water-turtles/ebook/product-17551523.html A good general e-book on aquatic turtles is https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/red-eared-sliders-katrina-smith/1102168496?ean=9780793849246 If interested in adopting, please include your CITY AND STATE and "Fredrik African helmeted turtle in Reston, VA" in the body of the email when emailing [email protected] to request an application. Shipping is possible if the adopter pays for shipping (usually $45-$125 depending on location) and if temperatures are safe for shipping on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Like turtles but can't have one? You can help by sharing my profile on social media and sharing the MATTS website (www.matts-turtles.org) so keepers and potential pet keepers can learn how to best care for a turtle or tortoise.
