My Story

I'm an adult Florida softhshell turtle (Apalone ferox) available near Baltimore, MD. I'm probably around 11-13 years old, and my shell is about 10" long, but it could grow to be 12-14" and I could live another 10-20 years. I'm probably going to stay small for my species, since I haven't grown much in the last few years. Transport is available to York and Harrisburg, PA, and transport may be possible to Arlington, VA. I need at least a 100 gallon aquarium or Rubbermaid stock tank or indoor pond with a basking area and underwater hide spots. Rubbermaid or Tuff Stuff stock tanks from Tractor Supply or True Value are much cheaper than aquariums, usually about $1 a gallon. I'll need a water heater to keep the water about 72-75F, and a basking platform. MATTS can send pictures of home-made basking areas, if that helps. I eat pellets such as Mazuri or Zoo Med brand, and an occasional piece of fruit and greens. An insect, earthworm, or piece of plain cooked chicken makes a good treat. I need VERY clean water, so a good canister or home-made filter is needed for the water. I cannot live outside in the winter, since I'm a southern species. I was purchased as an illegal hatchling at a reptile show, and the person who bought me soon realized I was going to get too big for an apartment. It's best if I'm an only turtle in an enclosure, as I get big and softshells can pack a mean bite. E-mail [email protected] TO REQUEST AN ADOPTION APPLICATION. Please include YOUR CITY AND STATE in the email. I come with a no sale, no trade, no breeding adoption contract. There is a $5 adoption fee for Florida softshells. Once the application has been returned and reviewed, you'll be asked to put together an enclosure and send pictures of it, before making arrangements to pick me up. Like turtles but can't have one?
