My Story

Nuclear Cam is a just turned 20 year old pacing gelding who had a respectable racing career. Since joining Safe Harbor through our Auction Intercept Program, he has received updated veterinary care, dental floating, deworming, and farrier care. He is now at a healthy weight and has been in ground work sessions 3-4 times per week to build his topline and prepare for a rider. He arrived at Safe Harbor 250 pounds underweight in desperate need of weight and physical rehabilitation. Word of mouth stated that he'd been a "trail horse" for a short time and had previously "won a bunch" in speed racking classes, said to be able to rack at 31 miles per hour. Unfortunately, Nuke has also been the victim of what we will call the "dumb redneck" mentality of Get On, Go Fast. He doesn't know he's supposed to stand for mounting, he doesn't have much in the way of refined 'buttons' under saddle, and he's been ridden in poorly fitting tack for so long that he's got a spot on his back where his hair grows wonky. We will be limiting his adopters to those 170 pounds and less, and he will absolutely need someone who is aware of properly fitting tack. Nuke is incredibly naturally gaited, extremely smooth, and unfailingly kind. He needs a patient, kind, confident human who is willing to help build his stamina back up to enable him to be comfortable on longer rides (walks of increasing distance are important!) All this to say: We are not clearing Nuke for typical adoption at this time. We are looking for a good rider who understands all of the above information and wants a trail riding project. We will do a foster-to-adopt with this person to ensure the best possible fit for both parties. If you would like to sponsor Nuke's training or ongoing care, please visit https://www.safeharborhorses.org/donations or via PayPal using [email protected]. If you are interested in a foster-to-adopt with Nuke, please complete an adoption application: www.safeharborhorses.org ** Inquires via shared sites will not be answered. As a foster-based organization, our adoption process requires a completed and approved application prior to meeting horses, out of respect for everyone's time and privacy. An in-person meeting is required. Answers to frequently asked questions are on our website. Thank you for your understanding. **
