My Story

ATFO candidate in training with Danielle Mullens of Mullens Horsemanship.* Desperado 2019 Appalachian Brumby Chestnut gelding 13.3 hh estimated FEE: $1500 starting bid in August *TRAINING: This horse is part of a special training event called the Appalachian Trainer Face Off. You can learn about it on the ATFO Facebook page or website. Horses in this training event are adoptable in August, following 100+ days of training. Desperado – This beautiful little boy is working hard to let somebody love him. Born into a feral herd in Grant County, West Virginia, Desperado has been with the rescue since 2021 and is learning a lot during his ATFO training. Danielle, his trainer, says Desperado has a ton of personality and really enjoys having a job. Here are some things to know about Desperado … • He is working on trusting the farrier to be a good, still boy. (His hooves are nice and sturdy.) • Has the BIGGEST personality. He will play with brushes, splash in the water, and follow his person to the ends of the earth. • Will walk, trot, canter both English and Western and is collecting more and more each ride. He is still working on straightness. • Leads, loads, and ties just about anywhere. • Has started jumping small cross rails and logs. • Is well traveled! He’s hit a couple different trails and arenas. He’s the same horse anywhere he goes. Danielle hopes to get him around more crowds before the ATFO. • Is working on developing his confidence while riding alone. He will lead and actually does better when he does. He tends to go in autopilot when he’s the follower and seems to be a little spookier because he’s not paying attention. • Will cross ANY water (including arena puddles, lakes, kiddie pools, and creeks). Don’t miss this opportunity! Apply to adopt and come meet this guy! Danielle puts it best: “I truly believe the world is his oyster and he is going to excel at whatever his future person desires. Reach out and let’s chat about this awesome horse!” Keep up with Desperado’s journey at #hopteamdesperado or follow his progress on his trainer’s Facebook page. Adoption Info: Adoption fees may be outdated, as a horse may have moved into training, so check with us on most current fee. Horses adopted are typically up to date on vaccines, dental floats, farrier care and all vet needs. Horses are typically located in the Appalachian area, but please inquire about a horse's specific location when you apply! We are looking to adopt to safe homes. A history of good horsemanship, the ability to provide sufficient care with good vet, farrier and peer references are important. If you are a first-time horse owner, we will require you to board at a facility for the first year while you learn more about care. We encourage everyone to take advantage of riding lessons. Foal adoptions require previous, established experience with youngsters. Our adoption process makes sure you get the right horse for you – it is a no-fail process for finding the right match.
