My Story

Clementine is ready to make your horse-girl dreams come true! This big, gentle sweetie is ready to follow you around the farm while you do chores and take you trail riding over any terrain you can imagine. CLEMENTINE'S BACKGROUND Before coming to SKE, Clementine had a single home from the time she was a filly. In that home, she got a gentle start to riding and then did infrequent trail rides. She was reliable and dependable undersaddle and was the same horse no matter how long she sat between rides. CLEMENTINE'S TRAINING Clementine has done an excellent job sailing through our "life skills" & "riding foundations" checklists! Her education has been 100% R+ (clicker training, fear-free/force-free) since arrival. Her list of behaviors includes: - Haltering - Leading (with halter, off a target, or off body language/at liberty) - Nose targeting (target stick & hand targets) - Stationary targeting (at a cone, mat, or bucket) - Body handling (for brushes, petting, vet, etc.) - Veterinary handling (checking eyes, ears, nose, teeth/mouth, teats, etc.) - Cooperative injections (IV & IM) - Cooperative oral medications (via syringe, though she will also eat medications mixed into food) - Cooperative eye drops/ointments - Cooperative aerosol spray (like aluminum spray / aluspray) - Cooperative fly spray - Trailer loading (both ramp & step up; turning to walk off & backing off) Clementine is intelligent, gentle, and willing to do anything you ask for the promise of a cookie at the end! We have yet to find anything that scares her and have not found any task she doesn't want to do (except walking away from a bucket of feed). Clementine tackled our equine agility courses flawlessly on the first try. She is happy to do trail obstacles in hand, at liberty, or under saddle. Clementine is a DREAM undersaddle!! She loves going for rides, will carry you anywhere you ask, and is extremely safe - if you can sit on her, you can ride her! She stands perfectly for tacking, lines up and stands still at the mounting block, and is happy in the arena or on trails. Most of her riders prefer to go for solo rides because of her "loud" communication style with other horses (see 'special needs' below), but she has also done well in group lessons, we just ensure she is given plenty of "personal space" and doesn't have other horses coming into her "bubble." Clementine has already helped several of our more nervous riders gain confidence in the saddle, and taken a variety of adults & kids for their first-ever pony ride! CLEMENTINE'S HEALTH HISTORY Clementine was born in ???, making her ?? years old as of the summer of 2024. She is approx. 15.2-3 hh with a thick, sturdy build! She is happy to carry larger adults for casual/infrequent rides and can easily carry average sized riders for high-impact/performance rides. Like most Foxtrotters, Clementine is an easy, easy keeper! She does not require any special supplementation nor grain to stay thick and round. When she first arrived, she received supplements to help her regulate her hormone cycles (due to a history of discomfort during her heat cycles). We suspect her low back gets sore while she is in heat, and this makes her uncomfortable during riding. This can be managed with supplements to help her regulate her cycles in the summertime, or can be managed by doing in hand/liberty work during her heat cycles and enjoying riding the rest of the month. Clementine has a long, gorgeous mane and a shiny, golden coat. She loves having her mane braided and will stand for brushing all day long! Clementine has healthy, strong barefoot hooves. She has a history of high/low syndrome on her front hooves, which can cause a clubbed foot if left to an unqualified farrier. She has not had any issues with this during her time at SKE and we wouldn't anticipate problems as long as she continues with a skilled barefoot trimmer. Clementine is happy to be trimmed at liberty, using R+ and consent cues, and has done well with traditional farrier handling in the past, too. Clementine has not had any soundness issues since we've known her - she has a beautiful foxtrot and is happy to do a classic two-beat trot, too. Clementine has not had any major health complications, nor other veterinary problems since her arrival at SKE, aside from two mild hoof abscesses early after her arrival. Since adjusting to varied terrain and improving her hoof balance, she has not had any issues with this. CLEMENTINE'S SPECIAL NEEDS Clementine has had one eye surgically removed due to issues with her vision, and is half blind. Her remaining eye appears fully functional and has not had issues. Her eye removal occurred long before her arrival at SKE and does not impair her mobility in any way. From the time she was a filly, Clementine was isolated in solo turnout. Since arriving at SKE, she has successfully integrated into several of our rescue herds without issue. That said, Clementine is "loud" with her communication - she will pin her ears at other horses and squeal, spin to threaten a kick, throw kicks/bucks in the air, will threaten to bite other horses. Her communication is on the extreme side of normal, and can be intimidating to watch, but she has not been a danger/threat to any other horses, and this behavior is limited to herd interactions, never around people. This "social awkwardness" is not uncommon for horses who have been isolated, especially during formative years as foals. Clementine needs an adopter who will understand that she is "awkward" but not dangerous, and support her through her social struggles. Her adopter also needs to be prepared to work with any other caretakers to ensure everyone is comfortable with her "loudness" in the herd. HOW TO ADOPT CLEMENTINE SKE seeks adopters who have good intentions & good core values to direct them on their horsemanship journey - plus the knowledge, resources, & facilities to provide a great life to their adopted equine. If you feel that describes you, we would love for you to provide Clementine with an amazing home! Start the application process by filling the adoption application: skequine.com/adopt Contact SKE with any questions or concerns: [email protected] Clementine is available for adoption through SKE for $4,500.
