July 8 - Volunteer notes: We spent a bit of Monday morning with Yoshi. Since the shelter was closed (statutory holiday), we brought our dog Patrick (7 yr old GSD mix) with us. Yoshi and Patrick did the polite “sniff butts and groins” doggy greeting and then walked around a bit. Patrick barked in Yoshi’s face to tell him “I’m the bigger dog”. Yoshi didn’t really care one way or the other. He just kept on smiling and wagging his tail. We walked through the back trails where Yoshi and Patrick played the "I can pee higher than you" contest. Being the smaller dog, I don’t think Yoshi had a chance at winning that game, but he got an “A” for effort. Yoshi also got to meet one of the younger, new, temporary residence of the shelter and took a little lap around the field with our resident sweetie pie, Shaye (now adopted). Yoshi always has a smile on his face for everyone and every thing. It is quite an infectious smile that is bound to bring happiness and light to your heart. Nothing seems to get Yoshi’s spirit down. He is an easy dog to be with; easy on the leash, easy at play, easy on the eye.

July 21 - Volunteer notes: Yoshi went to a doggy spa on Saturday to make sure his coat doesn’t get too out of shape while he waits for his new home. Yoshi had no problem riding in my car. He was a quiet little gentleman. He wasn’t put off walking into a store with other dogs and people either. Yoshi does seem to take everything in stride. Yoshi was a little bit nervous about being combed out, but he took it like a trooper. Yoshi’s groomer was very impressed with Yoshi and told me Yoshi was easier to groom than some of her long time clients. I think Yoshi made a few friends at the spa. They couldn’t understand why a good dog like Yoshi was surrendered, as he was such a good natured little fellow.
Yoshi went for a walk around the neighbourhood after his grooming. He does love to mark and that back leg will crawl up higher than you could ever expect a dog his size could get it. Yoshi does like to greet people on the street, but he does it politely. He doesn’t jump on them. He just stands in front of them and waits for a pet.
I have been told that Yoshi has been visited by several people who were interested in adopting him. But the consensus is that Yoshi is aloof and isn’t making a connection with them when they take him out. I think you have to remember that Chows are known to be reserved with strangers and when you meet Yoshi for the first time, you are a stranger to him. Chows are known to be very loyal to their families, so if you are looking for a loyal companion, Yoshi is your man. Yoshi isn’t the type of dog who will jump all over you and kiss your face. But he is a happy dog who appears to accept all things thrown at him. I think that is a pretty A+ characteristic for a dog
