Y_PLUS: Bertha

BERTHA Illinois Doberman Rescue Plus had taken in a number of Chihuahuas from a puppy mill. Mills are typically overcrowded with dogs valued solely for the puppies they produce. Our Chihuahuas have not been well-socialized and most of them are quite fearful due to neglect. Many, if not most, would not make good playmates for another dog at this time (they are too frightened to play), and prefer small spaces rather than the full freedom of an entire house. Many are overwhelmed by too much human attention and commotion. The ideal adopter would be one that understands that the Chihuahua-human relationship is presently one-way....the adopter offers shelter, food and comfort and the dog takes. The pay-off for the adopter is the satisfaction of truly saving and enriching a dog's life, and hopefully watching the dog slowly bloom and become a more confident and happy pup. A quiet home, a regular routine, and an owner who does not expect much return of affection at this point is sorely needed for these dogs who have been not been dealt a fair hand. The majority have been adopted but we still have Bertha (Twinkie) and Harmony left. Twinkie as she has been lovingly renamed due to the white streak down her back-kind of looks like the filling is coming out, has made tons of progress. She loves to see you and wags her tail constantly. She especially loves her little stuffed bear that she carries around everywhere. It is when you take her out of her out of her familiar surroundings that the tail stops. She is also still nervous about being picked up, but slowly and without forcing she will get over that too. She is 6 years old and about 9 pounds. She is good with all the other dogs and with the cats.
