After several requests - Xanthus is pronounced "ZAN-thus" - But we call him Xanth (pronounced Zanth) for short after the Piers Anthony books.
Update 5/29/06: We recently started on crate training. For a few hours at most, we put all six puppies into a big kennel. So far results have been wonderful! Potty training is going very well. We've been taking them outside, and they seem to understand that it's where they're supposed to go potty. However, they do not signal that they need to go out. When they first get up from a nap, just after eating, or when they start to sniff around are the times they need outside. They're getting better and coming back in the house on their own when they are done outside. Since we've been going out now, they sleep a lot better, especially right after a good 20 minute play session in the grass! Xanth is currently pending a home check. We are no longer accepting applications right now for him, as we believe the one on file may be "the one" for him. If you'd like to adopt one of his siblings, Ophelia, Omega, and Orlando are still awaiting someone to put in an application for them.
Update 5/23/06: The vet visit went great! Xanth is now current on his vaccinations, and has been deemed healthy! He weighed in at 7.9 pounds, remaining the heavyweight in the litter. The vet did find a small umbilical hernia, but said that it can be easily repaired while he's anesthetised for his neuter (at 5-6 months old). He will be ready to go to his forever home on June 2 (8 weeks old)!
Update 5/20/06: Today the puppies got their very first collars, complete with stainless steel name tags! Xanth has a black collar.
Update 5/18/06: Vaccinations are scheduled for Monday (5/22/06). We will be holding a special adoption day Saturday May 27th from 1-2pm at Pet North in Brainerd. We strongly encourage everyone interested in adopting to please come and meet them in person!
Update 5/17/06: Today was "get as dirty as you can" day (I guess we didn't get the memo). So as long as they were all getting another bath, we let them go outside in the play yard for the first time. As you can see they seemed to have a blast, but got even dirtier.
Update 5/9/06: The puppies have started eating solid food mixed with the soft. Potty training is progressing, and aim is improving, but not perfect. The puppies have been introduced to toys now and enjoy playing with tennis balls and rope toys. They haven't shown much interest in the Kong, Nylabone, or real bone.
Update 5/6/06: Xanthus got his first bath! He loves to explore and play, and was one of the first of the litter to approach the resident felines! Nobody can resist his gorgeous face. The puppies were moved yesterday from the livingroom into the kitchen to help with potty training and giving them a bit more space to play.
Update 5/2/06: All puppies now have teeth and are starting on soft puppy food once a day in addition to nursing.
Update 4/28/06: Potty training is a success!! All of the puppies have now used the piddle pad! We will start with outside potty training after 6-week vaccinations.
Update 4/26/06: Xanthus is looking more and more like a shar pei in his face shape. His ears are smaller than those of his siblings, his nose in big, and he loves to play! He doesn't descriminate, and will play with anybody, human or puppy! He is often found sleeping "belly up" in a pile of siblings.
Update 4/20/06: Xanthus is opening his eyes!
Xanthus is one of an unwanted litter of 6 pups born Friday, April 7th 2006. They appear to be lab/shar pei by best guess (their faces are wrinkled). Only time will tell for sure though.
Xanthus was the first born. He is yellow with a barely noticeable white spot on his forehead. At 24-hours old, Xanthus weighed 1 pound, 4 ounces, the biggest of the litter. At 11 days old (4/18/06) he weighed 2 pounds, 8 ounces. At three weeks old (4/29/06), Xanthus weighed 3 pounds, 13 ounces, remaining the largest pup of the litter.
We are accepting applications now, but these puppies will not be available until they are 8-12 weeks old. At that time they will be current on vaccinations, dewormed, microchipped, well socialized, and started on potty training. As with all adoptions, this puppy will go to his new home with a collar, ID tag, microchip tag, vaccination records, adoption kit, and rabies tag (if 16 weeks or older).
Adoption fee is $150.
Please call between noon and 6pm. We only adopt to homes in Minnesota.
