My Story

Winn Dixie is a dead ringer for the rare and highly prized Berger Picard. Bred in parts of Europe and Canada, it is suspected that he was brought to the south to be a herding dog. This is not a dog for everyone. He needs an experienced dog handler as this is a very independent dog. As it is described by the Rare Breed Association, this is a very intelligent breed but can be stubborn and determined to do what it wants to. He is a dog that needs to be with other dogs and people to be happy. He also needs lots of exercise. He is very sensitive to the tone of voice and responds best to strong but cheerfully given commands. It is said that you need patience, imagination and a sense of humor to live with a Berger Picard. He has been living with other dogs and gets along with all of them. He can be protective around his toys but shares his food. He loves going to the dog park and playing with all of the dogs, big and small. He also loves going for car rides. He needs to learn to walk on a leash and come when called. Since he has not lived with children as far as we know, he will be adopted only to a home with adults. This breed is very similar in personality to the Briard. In order to find the best possible home for him, we are willing to let him go out of state to a home that is right for him as long as it is a good match even if you are far away, please apply for him.

This organization is run by volunteers only and we try our best to save as many homeless pets as possible. Since there are only a few volunteers, please understand that we are unable to answer phone calls about the animals. The first step is to fill out an adoption application which you can find on the Pet Rescue website: www.ny-petrescue.org and we will contact you as soon as possible, usually within 5 days. Pet Rescue doesn't have a shelter where you can come and meet the dogs. All showings are by appointment after your application has been approved. If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected] .

If you would like to sponsor a dog, please go to our home page at www.ny-petrescue.org. To sponsor the vet care of a dog, we need $100; to sponsor the transport of a dog, we need $25. Partial sponsorship is always appreciated.
