My Story

AZARI (fostered in Germantown, NY) is a young senior hippo (est 9 years) whose owner, desperate for someone to help him, brought him to our city shelter NYC ACC in Nov. 2022 and tied him to the fence. This simple act of placing his dog gently on his own jacket so AZARI did not rest on the cold concrete, careful to leave his shampoos on a bag next to his emaciated body, was absolutely kindness. So many dog guardians simply discard them to be found as strays and brought in by police or members of the public. Azari was loved. We’ve spent more than 20K on this sweet soul since we saved his life in Feb 2022, primarily in speciality veterinary services to ensure his health needs were met, from neutering and vaccines to neurological issues being ruled out with an MRI and advance diagnostics, as well as a dental surgery to correct severe dental disease and remove rotting teeth. We are thrilled to share this senior boy is happy, healthy and looking for love! SLEEP, EAT, CUDDLE, REPEAT: AZARI is the gentle force in our #OneLuckyPup program, the dog we worry most about. He is light, love and sweet affection but has no takers. He’s a big boy entering his senior years - dogs are an unknown as he’s had varying reactions and we believe he’d simply like to enjoy the rest of his life with humans who are looking for a lower energy dog who likes to sleep 23 hours out of the day and eat and cuddle the remaining hour. He has been fostered with Pancake the cat for the past eight months and after an intro period, they coexist beautifully! AZARI is medically stable on a prescription diet. While he is missing most of his teeth, he eats his kibble and wet food just fine. He is crate trained but doesn’t require it. He loves the car, long meandering walks and wet kisses. He has never met a lap he didn’t want to rest his head in or a treat that didn’t call his name. AZARI has been reactive to new humans who startle him in his home/yard and because of this, should not go to a home with children. His ideal home should be gentle, relaxed and without heavy traffic from strangers. To apply to adopt (out of state okay, he does great in the car!) head to mrbonesandco.org/adopt or email [email protected] with questions. Thank you!
