My Story

Valley is a cute 4-year old female Pit Bull Terrier mix who was brought to the HSOV on January 24, 2024 after she was found on Mitchell Drive in the Newport Ohio area (and that date is correct and is not a typographical error) Valley's two 3-month old puppies (Everest and Meadow) had been brought in a few days earlier. They were healthy youngsters who found homes through rescue within a few weeks, but their little mother was extremely underweight and needed medical surveillance/attention. This little lady has a beautiful charcoal gray coat with a large patch of white on her chest, white paws, a long tail, and an adorable face with soulful brown eyes, a blue/gray nose, and semi-erect ears. Valley has distinctive sunken/hollow spaces (possible muscle atrophy) above her eyes which gives her a sad facial expression but she is actually a happy girl. Valley was very underweight when she arrived at our shelter and weighed just 25 lbs. She has been closely monitored by one of our wonderful local veterinarians for the past six months (and her blood work results as well as other medical tests have looked fine) .. But she is still not gaining weight (likely because her system isn't absorbing nutrients due to being emaciated for so long before she came to HSOV). Valley has been prescribed Carafate tablets which she takes each day with a special kibble/wet food diet. Valley enjoys being a daytime resident in the HSOV Director's office (along with Valley's best friend Isabell). These girls are the best of unlikely friends when you see them together. Isabell is a full-figured Pit Bull Terrier girl who weighs 105 lbs while Valley is a petite 25-lb girl. They snuggle up together for naps, have synchronized 'howling' sessions, and love to take long walks side-by-side with our HSOV staff, kennel techs, and volunteers. Valley has her unique bedtime routine since she spends her nights in another area of the shelter. When it's time for Valley to leave the Director's office at closing time, she knows the routine when Executive Director Amy Rogers tells Valley "it's time to go to bed" .. And Valley quickly jumps into action and heads for her bed. She is a smart little cookie who loves to please Amy. We've grown very attached to Valley (and Isabell) but know they would be much happier in homes of their very own with their own special people to love them 24/7 instead of spending the rest of their lives in a shelter environment. So we've made the difficult decision to place them both up for adoption (either together or separately) .. And Valley's veterinarian also feels that being in a real home would likely help her with gaining weight. These photos of Valley were taken in January, February and March 2024. Valley loves to wear doggy pajamas, sweaters, and coats (which have become her 'trademark').
