My Story

Meet Vader, a mellow, gentle, curious, and loving boy with mature energy. While Vader may be shy initially, he quickly develops strong, loving bonds with people who show him kindness and love. Vader is around 4 years old and 70 lb. • Gentle and Affectionate: Vader loves belly rubs, head rubs, neck rubs, and ear skritches. He adores snuggling up gently with his foster parents on the couch and cuddling by his fostermom's feet under her desk at work. He is always gentle meeting dogs and humans. • Mellow, Quiet, and Well-Behaved: Vader is a mature and mellow boy who walks gently on leash, never jumps, and is quiet and patient. He lets new friends come to him when meeting. He accompanies his foster mom to work every day and is a perfect gentleman, calmly keeping to himself while she works and behaving like a perfect gentleman with other office dogs and coworkers. • House-Trained & Calm Left Solo: Vader is house-trained. He sleeps soundly when left solo loose in the home (up to 4 hours during the day, 8+ overnight) without any anxiety or accidents. • Loves Doggo Companions: As a shy doggo, Vader gains confidence and comfort being in the company of a confident doggo friend, but he is also happy to hang out without dogs. When meeting new dogs, he prefers 1:1 introductions, as big groups of dogs can make him nervous. Once, a dog barked at Vader on a walk and he hid under a bench. Thankfully, Vader’s buddy Behr was there to join him under the bench and reassure him it would all be OK! After realizing Behr had his back, Vader happily emerged from the bench and finished his walk. Vader loves walking with a dog companion and has made doggo friends at his foster mom’s workplace. He’d be great in a home either with or without dogs, and is happy to share his treats and toys with others. • Perfect Blend of Couch Potato and Avid Explorer: Vader loves hanging out on the couch with his humans (his fostermom reports his favorite TV shows are Lady Jane Grey, Bridgerton, and Blacklist) and taking naps when they are busy, but is also absolutely thrilled to run and jog with his fostermom. Basically, as long as he’s with his people, he is happy! • Brave and Tolerant: Although he may initially be timid or uncertain upon meeting, Vader has a brave and curious heart. He loves car rides, especially when he can hang his head out the window. He is fine with his paws, ears, and tail being touched. He does not mind loud noises including the vacuum – in fact, his foster mom reports he enjoys listening to metal and punk! He loves being close to people he trusts, but will venture out and explore if you let him! • Good with Cats: Vader has passed several feral cats in his neighborhood and had no reaction. We’ve seen no sign of prey drive. We think he’d be good in a home with cats! Vader was brought into the Fresno Animal Center covered in bite marks that indicate a difficult past. He was physically and emotionally shut down in the overwhelming shelter environment. Thankfully, he was a staff and volunteer favorite, and got to hang out in the staff office because they loved him so much! As Vader was running out of time at the shelter, overlooked because of his black coloring and his shyness, staff reached out to us with a plea to save him. Despite everything he’d endured, Vader has shown incredible resilience and continued to be an adoring boy who wants nothing more than to be loved. This loving, gentle spirit is being fostered in Hayward and is adoptable from Underdog Animal Rescue!
