Hello,
I just wanted to send you some photos of Charlie (AKA Toby) who I adopted from you guys just about a year ago.
He is a total success story and I just adore him. Every morning we walk my neighborhood in Capital Hill. Sometimes we stop at Port City Java where the nice baristas give Charlie a dog treat. Other Times we stop and check in with the other dogs at Lincoln Park. Charlie can be slightly aloof and tends to ignore the other dogs but likes to hang out on the fringe and take it all in (Unless you’re a Weimaraner – he really dislikes Weimaraners and we have no idea why). Sometime, rarely, Charlie will play fetch (this makes me very happy as I love to see him play).
After work, weather permitting, I take Charlie to Congressional Cemetery where he is a member. Here he can roam free and chase as many squirrels as he wants (keeping a close look out for his Weimaraner nemesis of course!). Often we are accompanied by his downstairs neighbor Min (a White Shepard/Retriever mix). We never thought he particularly cared for her until she was attacked by a pit-bull – Charlie ran to her defense and chased her attacker away!
On weekends if Charlie and I are lucky, we go up and visit our friends in the country. Charlie and his friend Dakota (a 3 legged White Shepard) come and go through their doggie door and enjoy rolling in anything that smells bad (think cows). He takes his bath like a champ so it’s not too awful… He is a fantastic companion and a wonderful trail dog. When I go hiking there is no need to keep him on a leash. He just trots ahead on the path, always staying on the trail.
We have had the pleasure of meeting several Ridgebacks at our local dog parks. The general consensus from Ridgeback owners is that is he is in fact a Ridge-less Ridgeback mix. Possibly mixed with a pit bull. My Vet at Friendship Animal Hospital always comments on how muscular and handsome he is. I think he is up about 6 pounds since I adopted him last year.
I am so lucky to have found Charlie. Thank you so much for all you do!
Caroline (and Charlie)
Toby is a gentle, sweet, and well-mannered dog with a wonderfully adapting personality.
Toby is not quite sure how he ended up in rescue care - nor are we -but he seems to understand that a dog's life is inextricably tied tothat of a human, and that the well-being of both can sometimes face very slippery footing.
That being said, Toby has accepted his new-found status as a fosterdog, and is making the best of it. If today he's a bit down on his luck, he'll just be as good a dog as he can so he'll get a good report tomorrow, when SURELY he'll be going home.
Toby is well mannered, calm, and easy-going. Thanks to his stable personality, he abides patiently and trustingly; he is undemanding of his foster caregiver, but infinitely grateful for petting and hugs, and he loves to bury his head in his caregiver's lap. His self-sufficiency is rather touching; often he is found throwing his bone about for himself and then retrieving it. Occasionally he gives over to bursts of playfulness, and would make a great walking or hiking partner, but often Toby is content to be a true couch potato.
Beautifully proportioned, Toby has long legs, a long back, and a very noble head. His short coat is extremely sleek; his eyes are soft, his expression open and friendly.
Toby's housetraining is excellent, and his house manners are above reproach. He is not chewy or destructive, in fact, although he loves his rawhides, he rarely chews on them. He prefers to play with them like toys, and then carefully store them in his little stash of personal items. Toby is accomplished in the commands "sit" and "sit pretty", in which he sits up and waves his front paws in the air.
Toby is a usually quiet guy, voicing only at important matters of great concern, such as fire engines. He pulls a bit on lead, but he is working hard on that, and he greets everyone with the same even keel and reasonable outlook that characterizes his demeanor at home.
Toby is an eminently good dog - uncomplicated, sweet, and hopeful. He is a little like a guy who has taken up residency in a hotel room, but knows that he'll be going home any time now, just as soon as things "settle down" a little. We would like to help Toby make it home, as he will reward the commitment of his adopter(s) with a gentle and devout bond.
