My Story

...ADOPTED!...Stevie Ray, poodle, neutered, male 13 pounds, 1 year old, blind

This is StevieRay, a one-year-old, completely blind poodle. His foster describes StevieRay as "a dear soul -oh so gentle, loving, appreciative, and sweet. He is housebroken, he is quiet, gets along with the other dogs and cats (can't see the cats), and loves attention.

Stevie Ray, a real little gentleman, has been unfortunate enough until now to be surrounded by people who appear to have been completely hardened. First, his owner turned him in to the shelter without explanation or emotion. He was a mess -- matted and filthy. Then, the shelter people said that if we did not take him that day, they would put him down immediately.

After bathing him (and he was so trusting while being immersed into a tub of water by a complete stranger he could not even see) and clipping him, he looks pretty good, and we began to see the charming little guy underneath the dirt. He's very friendly and after uncertain awkward introductions to other dogs, he settled in and gets along fine with everyone.

There are special adjustments one must make with a blind dog -- in StevieRay's case, these are quite reasonable. He has to be carried up and down the stairs (at 13 pounds, not a hardship) and carried outside and monitored in the yard. He's fine being confined if needed. He hears well though (thankfully!), and what a great personality. StevieRay simply has no issues other than being blind. Overall, he is a wonderful little dog who would be an excellent companion for someone who leads a relatively quiet life. If you can make this commitment to Stevie Ray, he would make the same commitment to you, threefold. Post-adoption counseling would be made available to instruct adopters on how to deal with a blind dog.
