ADOPTED! - Spice is a Shih Tzu/Bichon puppy (known as a "Teddie") who was born January 3 in an Amish puppy mill. Now, approaching 6 months of age, she weighs 7 lbs, so she will probably weigh about 9 lbs. when fully grown. Spice loves everyone (people, as well as dogs and cats) and she is very cute and well behaved. She is even 98% housetrained! Spice loves children but--because she is so tiny--we would prefer that she be adopted by an individual or couple with no young children, since she might be inadvertently injured by a small child. We also want Spice to have a young doggie pal to play with (we don't want her to be an only child). Finally, we don't want Spice to be a "latchkey" dog, so an adopter who works out of his/her home, is retired, or just works part time would be ideal.
Spice has been spayed/immunized/wormed/microchipped and she has been started on heartworm preventative. Her adoption fee is $300.
Before you write to inquire about these Spice, PLEASE NOTE: We are looking for an adults-only non-latchkey home that has a safely fenced yard and another young dog for Spice to play with.
If you are interested in adopting Spice--and if you meet the above criteria--please send us a "cover letter" telling us a little about yourself, your living situation, your work schedule, if you have other pets and a safely fenced yard, etc. (Our e-mail address is:
[email protected]) Then, if we feel Spice would be a good fit for you, we will e-mail you an application to fill out and then return to us. br>Please click on "One Starfish Rehoming Connections" above the photo to read more about our rescue's adoption policies and fees. We do not operate a humane society or shelter, so we do not have a facility that is open to the public. Our dogs are fostered by volunteers in private homes, and are not available for viewing until an adoption application is filled out and references are checked. Before contacting us, please read the information on our home page (by clicking on our rescue name above this dog's photo).
UPDATE: If you are one of the very kind people who has inquired about Sugar (Spice's sister)--or has sent us a generous donation for her medical care--thank you so much!
Sugar and Spice were both rescued from an Amish puppy mill. Sugar was born with crooked rear legs and she wasn't able to get around as well as her siblings. After a very thorough exam and x-rays (and consults with various veterinary specialists), the orthopedic specialists at the University of Wisconsin Vet School discovered that the top end of Sugar's thigh bone (the femur) is somewhat malformed, which affects the way it "connects" to her hip joint. Fortunately for Sugar, we have recently found her the perfect home--where she will have two doggie playmates and where she will be much loved by a family who has experience with handicapped puppies.
