My Story

Sophie is a very gentle natured female Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier who spent her former life as a "Puppy Mill" breeder.
The life of a "Puppy Mill" breeder dog is a very isolated one. The only extra human interaction the females get is that which is needed to tend to the puppies she produces.
Sophie very likely had little or no other human contact other than to give her vaccinations, etc. or to shave her matted coat.
This is the way Sophie had spent All Of Her Life. She had No home, Sophie was a piece of inventory in a mill that produced Puppies.

Sophie's tongue is split on the end and part of the left side of her tongue is missing. This gives her a different sounding bark, however it does not cause her problems with eating or drinking.

Sophie was kept in a cage with a wire bottom. Sophie has No toes on her left back foot.br> It is not uncommon in a "Puppy Mill" for a dog with a long curved nail to get a nail caught in the wire bottom of the cage. In the panic of the pain of the moment the dog will literally rip off the caught toe to be free.

Sophie had No Reason to trust humans or their harsh gloved hands!

Sophie and her friends Sam and Sarah were the 3 most terrified dogs we have ever seen!
Sophie was past fear,Sophie seemed to have no desire to live. We wondered that first night if "The Wheatens" were going to live.

For weeks, Sophie would open her mouth and stare with a look of total hopelessness when she was picked up to and carried. Sophie was far too afraid to walk anywhere she might need to be taken.

Her harsh treatment had given Sophie no hope that there was anything better in life for her. Sophie would hide in the dog house and turn her head away seeming to think if she could not see me I could not see her. She would cower down with fear when I would reach in to gently stroke her and sing softly to her. Her muscles were tense and her eyes filled with fear.

Sophie did not know what it was to feel dirt or grass under his feet. She would pick her feet up high as if she were trying to get it off of the pads of her feet.
Having a dog house inside the safety of a 10' X 10' enclosure was a whole big new world for Sophie.
It was interesting to see that though she had lived for years having to eliminate in the wire cage she lived in, Sophie did not once soil inside the dog house!

UPDATE: 4/25/2007
It has been almost 3 Months since Sophie was rescued.
Sophie is still not sure humans can be trusted. Even so, Sophie has certainly Come a Very Long Way from the shaved, thin, frail, terrified dog she was at the time of her rescue.
Sophie is now full coated, strong and healthy. She enjoys the run of a small fenced yard and with playing with her friends.
Sophie has a quiet gentle nature and she is learning to trust me in spite of her fears. She watches me constantly as I interact with the other dogs. Sophie will let me pet her if she is in the house with Sam. Sophie is beginning to respond to the touch of gentle hands. She will let me look at her in the eyes and will not turn away even though she is still afraid. She will sniff my hands and treats I leave at her feet.

Sophie will make a sweet gentle companion for a Woman with a kind voice and gentle hands who has the time and interest to allow Sophie to see that she can be safe and free to give the love that is in her.
The more confident Sophie becomes in the love of her person, the more confident she will be with in herself.
I believe Sophie has been so abused by men that her Primary person needs to be a woman.
Sophie will only be adopted as an inside cherished companion.
A fenced yard is required to adopt Sophie.
