Smokey

This month’s featured pet is Smokey. We found Smokey lying in a concrete dog run at the local shelter looking very sad and very depressed. Once we read the story on Smokey’s cage card we understood why. This little Dachshund had been inside a home that caught on fire and he had jumped out of a second story window to escape the flames. The flames did actually get to his hind end, we are still healing the wounds, but it also injured Smokey’s back. When he first arrived, he was dragging but by the end of ten days he could walk on two very wobbly back legs (amazing considering he received no medical care the entire ten days he was there!). Smokey had been taken to the shelter by a policeman who was at the fire and the policy of the shelter is that he had to remain there for ten days to allow his owners to reclaim him. Well sadly, nobody came for him so we gladly took him in. The first thing I noticed when he picked this little survivor up and held him in my arms was how strongly he smelled of smoke ten days later. I tried to wash the smoke smell out but even after three very good shampoos, the smell was still there. Every time I picked him up the first thing I smelled was smoke which is why the name stuck. Smokey was also very, very thin and I doubt he got that way from ten days at the shelter but we are working on that and he is gaining weight and he is looking and feeling better. We are trying to heal the burns on Smokey’s back and we are resting his back, after that we will have him neutered and he will be ready to go into a new home.
