ADOPTED 1-23-10, thank you Alice of Post Falls, ID! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~UPDATE 1-15-10. Shelby has lost 5#'s so far, and is doing remarkably well with the 3 stairs off the back door down into the yard. She has much improved on the Rimadyl we are giving her for her pain and inflammation, but it's not something we want to keep her on long term. We are still working on getting the extra weight off, and some conditioning with short, daily walks. She improves daily. She should also be on Glucosamine/Chondroitin tabs (VERY affordable in a 500 count bottle from Costco) for the rest of her life. A high quality, senior kibble, such as Eagle Pack holistic select senior formula (she's on that now) is what we would like to see her stay on. She had her dental done, and didn't loose a single tooth! Dr. says he's very impressed with her genetics, as her jaw bone is very healthy, as were her teeth underneath all that plaque and tartar! **********************************************************************************************************************IN 12-27-09. Shelby was rescued in her final hour from a local kill shelter, where she'd been surrendered by her owner of the last 2 yrs. Her stated reason was "can no longer care for her". Not sure what she HAD been doing for care, as she also marked the dog was in need of vaccines, hadn't been to a vet, or groomed, in 2yrs and it's obvious she wasn't on any quality dog kibble. She is a purebred, 12yr old spayed female. She is obese, suffers from some arthritis, and knee/joint pain (mostly due to the weight) and was in horrible need of a grooming. It took 3 shampooings to get all the cigarette (owner obviously could afford THOSE) smell out of her beautiful coat. She was a trooper for the whole process and she looks so much better for it! Her fur was filthy, matted, and coming out in clumps due to lack of care. She IS a senior dog, who DOES need to loose some weight. We KNOW we are asking alot here, but there's got to be somebody out there that has a large heart, and possibly is a lover of the breed, who can take adorable, sweet Shelby in and give her the best last year(s) of her life. She doesn't deserve to be euthanized in a concrete walled, anxiety filled shelter by a complete stranger, after giving her life to someone, who then gave her to someone else who didn't take care of her, or even have the decency to take her to a vet and have her euthanized in their arms, with Shelby knowing she was loved. We are having her fully vetted, she's going to have her heart/blood pressure checked, and her hips/knees checked and her vaccines brought up to date. We'll start her on whatever meds Dr. feels she needs and a low fat, high quality kibble to start the #'s coming off. She'll also have her teeth cleaned. She will come with one month supply of any med's Dr. deems will make her life more comfortable. Please, open your heart to this senior angel, you'll feel so good for doing so!
