Foster Mom Report - August 2009
Sammy has been in foster care for several months and is well on the way to becoming the gentleman-puppy full of fun and love that he was meant to be.
Sammy had an uphill battle for the first few months of life, but given a chance this gorgeous man has become just as beautiful on the inside as he is on the outside. He's loving and caring and playful and full of life.
Sammy is wonderful on and off leash, he listens and stays right by your side. He's not afraid of thunderstorms or loud noises. Sammy doesn't bark often and usually only because the other dogs are barking. Sammy would be fine with another dog or as a lone puppy.
Sammy is crate trained and will go to his crate and sleep the whole night, but would cherish sleeping in a human bed too. Sammy is housebroken, sweet, loving and can be groomed without a muzzle (including nail clipping). Sammy's coat is rich and thick and soft as a duck. His skin is healthy and allergy free. This boy requires no special medicine or food.
The only time Sammy gets cranky is when he's tired at night or if you become aggressive - he becomes aggressive in return. When presented with love, Sammy returns more love than I thought a little silver shih tzu could!
Sammy loves to cuddle on the couch and we can pick him up and carry him around if need be... Sammy is a wonderful traveller in the car and does not make strange in new environments.
Sammy is wonderful with children, but given his history I would strongly recommend a child-free environment.
This boy has overcome and become an amazing little dog. Whoever adopts Sammy is going to be the lucky one. It will take a very special family to adopt such a special dog. We will miss him dearly...
Foster Mom Report - July 2009
Sammy did have a rough beginning and has some behavioural issues due to abuse at a young age, but he has come leaps and bounds in a very short period of time. When Sammy first came into foster care he was untouchable. The muzzle was required for any kind of handling. Sammy would become very aggressive, growling, biting and attacking. Since being neutered and living in a calm quiet house he is becoming more like the loving puppy that has been buried inside.
Sammy loves to play with my three other dogs. He likes to curl up on the couch with you and will accept gentle petting. In the past few days I have finally been able to pick him up (impossible a week ago). Sitting on the floor with a brush, I groomed my other dogs and Sammy saw what fun it was and immediately demanded to be brushed too. A long stretch from trying to bite a few weeks ago.
Sammy still has days where he growls, but it has been a while since he lashed out. He knows to go to his crate when he feel threatened and will calm down and come out when he’s ready to be kind again. Sammy is still untrusting and it will take months before he is the dog he was born to be, but with time, patience and love Sammy will become an amazing dog. He’s very bright and obedient. He stays by your side all the time and wants you to be in sight, if not always touching him.
Sammy is very food motivated and is getting better with taking a harness on and off. A cookie distraction and voila! All is well.
Sammy is strikingly attractive with his silver hair and large liquid eyes, but an experienced owner is a must. I believe Sammy would be happy in a home with another little dog where he could watch the interaction between human and canine to learn that the new family is safe.
Sammy has never shown any aggression towards children and cuddles with my 6 month old nephew and adores my 11 year old niece. Children must be respectful and not approach Sammy. If you let him come to you then he’s very warm and cuddly.
Sammy isn’t as unpredictable as we initially thought. Sammy will do whatever you ask as long as he understands the question – which can be difficult given we speak different languages. He knows to get off or down from your lap, couch or bed. He knows how to sit and loves his cookies. He knows to go to his crate and relax when he feels threatened. He knows when he growls he is no longer allowed to cuddle on the bed or couch. He’s learning he’s safe and he’s learning respect.
Sammy is delightful when in his puppy mode and plays with toys. Sammy needs to find the right home. He is a gorgeous little boy who deserves a good home.
My home is Sammy’s 8th home in his short 6 month life… please don’t take him on lightly. He will need time and love and patience, but will be an amazing little dog. Do you have enough experience and is your heart big enough to love a tough beautiful unique boy like Sammy??
He’s been looking for his forever home for a long time….
