My Story

Sam Wheaten is a very gentle natured male Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier who spent his former life as a "Puppy Mill" stud dog.
The life of a "Puppy Mill" stud dog is a very isolated life for a dog. Sam was kept in a cage with a wire bottom, taken out only to mate with a female then back into his cage of isolation. He likely had little or no other human contact other than to give him vaccinations, etc. or to shave his matted coat.
This is the way Sam had spent All Of His Life. He had No home, Sam was a piece of inventory in a mill that produced Puppies.

Sam had no reason to trust humans and their harsh gloved hands!

Sam and his friends Sophie and Sarah were the 3 most terrified dogs we have ever seen!
Sam was past fear,Sam seemed to have no desire to live. We wondered that first night if "The Wheatens" were going to live.

For weeks, Sam would open his mouth and stare with a look of total hopelessness when he was picked up to carry him. He was far too afraid to walk anywhere he might need to be taken.

His harsh treatment had given Sam no hope that there was anything better in life for him. Sam would hide in the dog house and turn his head away seeming to think if he could not see me I could not see him.

Sam did not know what it was to feel dirt or grass under his feet. He would pick his feet up high as if he were trying to get it off of the pads of his feet.
Having a dog house inside the safety of a 10' X 10' enclosure was a whole big new world for Sam.
It was interesting to see that though he had lived for years having to eliminate in the wire cage he lived in, Sam did not once soil inside the dog house!

UPDATE: 4/25/2007
It has been almost 3 Months since Sam was rescued.
Sam though he is still not sure humans can fully be trusted. Sam has certainly Come a Very Long Way from the shaved, thin, frail, terrified dog he was at the time of his rescue.
Sam is now full coated, strong and healthy. He enjoys the run of a small fenced yard and with playing with his friends.
Sam has a quiet gentle nature and he is learning to trust me. He watches me interact with the other dogs and Sam will let me pet him in his house with out tension in his muscles. Sam is beginning to enjoy the touch of gentle hands. He will let me look at him in the eyes and will not turn away. He will sniff my hands and treats I leave at his feet.

Sam will make a sweet gentle companion for a Woman with a kind voice and gentle hands who has the time and interest to allow Sam to see that he can be safe and free to give the love that is in him.
The more confident Sam becomes in the love of his person, the more confident he will be with in himself.

I believe Sam has been so abused by men that his Primary person needs to be a woman.
Sam will only be adopted as an inside cherished companion.
A fenced yard is Required to adopt Sam.
