Name: Sam Best Guess for Breed: Jack Russell terrier and chihuahua mix Best Guess for Age: 2 years as of April 2024 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 23 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats but he can be tested. We would be cautious placing him in a home with children under 12 years old because young kids can often scare shy dogs with their level of energy or noise Currently Living at: DC area foster Special adoption considerations: Sam is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months.We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! We would be cautious placing him in a home with children under 12 years old because young kids can often scare shy dogs with their level of energy or noise. Children would need to be supervised closely to not leave doors open and should never walk the dog without an adult holding the leash. He's looking forward to his new chapter, eagerly awaiting all the sniffy walks he will get with his new humans, romps in the park, and all the adventures they can dream up. He's out of the puppy yips and as a wise, experienced dog, knows what's most important in life: Being safe and loved and under his own roof, and that's right at the top of his wish list. Right now, he's shy and unsure in new environments, so he needs extra patient and loving adopters who will help him become more confident in new places, and a welcoming resident dog who will show him how to dog! What My Foster Says About Me: Sam is my shy, sweet little man. It takes him some time to feel OK around new people, but once he does, he will happily offer puppy kisses. Sam loves to play with toys and with other dogs, but after a busy day, he sleeps peacefully through the night. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training.
