My Story

Update: 6/15 Rook is a three year old Lab / Plott Hound mix. He is completely house trained and crate trained. He is being fostered in a home that has cats and he does great with them. He doesn't even mind them rubbing on him.

Rook does great with all other dogs. He was even short term fostered in a home with a 15lb dog and they did great together. Rook was very gentle with her and even let her climb all over him. Rook has been around children of all ages and loves them. Rook loves the water and loves swimming. Please consider giving Rook a forever home.

Rook apprears to be a Rottie mixed with Dutch Shepherd perhaps. He is a beautiful boy with a sad story, No he wasnt abused. But he was abandoned as a puppy. He has lived for 3 long years at a vet clinic only being let out for short periods to potty , When our partner shelter in Arkansas heard his story they sent a volunteer out to meet him, Naturally he is shy at first but after a few minutes his eyes light up and he is so grateful for anything, even the slighest pat or kind word. It just broke our hearts to see him look at you as if to say_will today be the day I can get out of here and have a family of my own?

He is crate and house trained. . He loves to play and will even throw the toy for himself. We feel older children would be better because he gets so excited for any bit of love and will jump up. He would not do well with cats and since no one ever worked with him probably no small dogs would be better at this time.

If you are looking for a loving companion and truely want to "rescue a dog" please take a second look at this sweet and loyal boy.

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England.
