Romeo

Romeo is looking for someone with experience with large dogs and someone who has the patience to give this boy the love and attention he so richly deserves. He has not ever really had a home from what we know, so this will be the first home he can call his home like any dog should be able to do. Romeo is a 7-year-old, black, male Giant Schnauzer. He is a strong, healthy dog and looking for a permanent home. It would be good for him to be active and have a day job! He knows basic obedience and is getting better all the time. He can be a bit stubborn until you show him who is boss. He walks well on a leash and with another dog. He will occasionally startle and be wary of new things in his surroundings. We think he was not introduced to a lot of different sights or sounds as a youngster. Thunderstorms don’t seem to bother him, though. In his current foster home, he has been coexisting with an indoor, dog-savvy cat for several months. MOST of the time that is an amicable arrangement, but he has been observed to give chase on occasion. He may not be as docile around an outdoor cat. He regards the parakeet as something to be caught—if he could.

Romeo would be a wonderful companion for someone who is accustomed to large, strong dogs. He is protective of his home and needs to be kept in check until he has time to warm up to strangers coming to the house. He gets along well with other dogs and people at the dog park, including kids. Because of his size, however, we would not recommend him with small children. More activity and more introductions on neutral ground would go a long way to helping him be more accepting of strangers near his home. He is a real sweetheart in every other way.
