Rocko suffers from glaucoma and will eventually become blind. Sometimes this can take up to 2 1/2 years, but I'm afraid it will probably be sooner. The day will come that he will need to have a surgery to remove his eyes or have prosthetics due to the eventual pain caused by the glaucoma. Right now he is slightly sight impaired. He is on daily meds to keep the pressure down in his eyes, and he takes them like a champ.
Rocko was brought to the Emergency Veterinary Hospital, where I work at, for cloudiness and squinting of his eyes. Unfortunately, his owners at the time could not afford the continued care and surgery that will eventually follow. They made the difficult decision to euthanize him. A couple of my coworkers and I were willing to give Rocko a second chance, and his owners agreed to adopt him to us. Now we are searching for his forever home before he becomes blind. I believe that he will do very well as a blind dog seeing that he seems to be a well rounded individual.
Rocko has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and is house and kennel trained. He is working on basic obedience and does well on a leash. He likes to go for rides in the car and does very well in them. So well that he falls asleep sometimes!
He absolutely loves other dogs and children!! He would be great in a home with both of these. He can wrestle with my mastiff and then be gentle with an 8 lb pup at the pet store! He loves to have hugs from kids. He also does well with cats although he may want to chase them if they are outside. In the time that I've had him, he has never shown any aggression at all. He will gently take treats and has no problem if you take his food away from him. He will happily meet any dog that you allow him to even if that means that dog will bite him. This has actually happened to him, and he just backed away and wagged his tail. He knows no stranger when it comes to meeting people as well.
He definitely has character. He loves to play tug'o'war whether it be with a human or dog. Rocko has this funny quirk of burying his head in your lap and acting as if he could barely hold himself up when he gets sleepy. When he does fall asleep on your lap you can move him around without him waking as a small child would. He is a huge snuggler.
Please help Rocko find his forever home. He desperately wants to be part of a family. Rocko is fostered in the Wichita, KS area, so please be sure you do your homework in regard to local Breed Specific Legislation. He will also require a fenced yard. If you can offer this special needs boy a special home, please fill out our online application at www.mabbr.org/application.html in the spot for the dog’s name please put “Courtesy Listing/Rocko”. We will forward that application to his caregiver. For any questions not answered here, please contact [email protected].
