Don't let Rascal's looks fool you. He's got lots of energy and enthusiasm for walks and he trots right along on a leash. He keeps up with everyone else and is delighted to be included. Rascal is not terribly food oriented, even though he's heavy, and he does not beg for food.
When Rascal gets tired, he goes to his crate. He also sleeps there at night.
Rascal lives with cats in his foster home. He has not chased them but he doesn't like when they come too close to his food or toys. He gets along well with the resident dog and is truly people oriented.
Despite spending those long years in the shelter, Rascal is pretty much house trained already. He's been going outside at regular intervals throughout the day and not having problems.
Please consider adding this happy-go-lucky beagle to your family.
January 28, 2008 Update.: Rascal has arrived in Maine and is in Foster Care! What a gem this porky 6 year old handsome guy is!!
From his foster mom: "Rascal arrived and is doing well - he is very active - he must have eaten TONS to get as overweight as he is - He is very affectionate and likes his crate - goes there when he's feeling tired or overwhelmed - I have 5 cats and he hasn't chased or been aggressive - a little shy with the most outgoing one - he was a good sport during his bath and now smells and feels much better. He loved romping in the new snow and does really well on walks around the neighborhood - He's been fine with the other dogs we've met on walks and with Pumpkin our resident dog - he seems to be people oriented and just needs to get that weight off - I'll forward photos when he sits still for long enough"
From his former sheltrer: Rascal came to us when he was approx. 2 years old in 2002. He is about six years old. Rascal is a sweet, loving, and friendly fellow. He is a bit over weight but it doesn't stop him from running around the yard after you to get you to stop and pet him. Rascal weighs 38 pounds, but should only weigh about 30 pounds. He is free fed at the shelter, and well, you know how it is when you get bored, you eat. So, a family life with some activity for Rascal would be FANTASTIC. Rascal gets along great with other dogs. He has gotten along well with all of the children (6 and up) who have come to the shelter to visit. Rascal 'HAS PERSONALITY PLUS!' the Arkansas director says. He always has a smile on his face and is a very happy and smart boy.

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
