Well, it has been seven months since we adopted Pippi from your organization and life has never been better! She is such an incredible dog! My wife and I absolutely adore her. She made an amazing adjustment to her new home - right from the start.
Pippi is a beautiful, energetic, and playful pit bull mix who absolutely loves people and interacting with other dogs (cats - not so much). My parents own a wonderful yellow lab that Pippi loves to harass - all in good fun. They have a great time together; trying to retrieve the same ball. As a matter of fact, we are going to visit my parents this weekend, Pippi will be so excited, she loves playing with her canine friends. Pippi also loves human interaction. Whenever we have company, she cannot wait to give them kisses, especially my wife's allergic friend!
I want to take this time to thank everyone at Hedgesville Hounds for informing us on this breed. You warned us that people would be wary of Pippi, because she is a pit bull. Unfortunately, this has been true on a few occasions. When we went to visit a friend in NYC (we want her to be a cultured) people actually went into the street to avoid her coming down the sidewalk. It makes us laugh because she is the furthest thing from being vicious. It is really too bad that this breed of dog has such a bad rap! Pippi even had to win over some hearts in our own families. Certain family members, informed by the strong media bias, thought pit bulls were pretty scary and unpredictable. Pippi has totally proven them wrong. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to adopt this wonderful and now spoiled dog. She brings us so much happiness! It seems as though we have had her forever!
There are some dogs and puppies whose eyes shine in a special way - a gaze that is open, and so filled with trust and expectancy that youknow they will have those bright eyes for the fullness of their lives.
Pippi is one of those puppies. She is completely happy, and her little ways are so touching and innocent that it is painful to contemplate any current world view of pit bulls that would try and diminish the genuine goodness of such a dog.
In social interactions Pippi wiggles with absolute delight. She approaches her training sessions with the enthusiasm of a child who has always looked forward to school, and has sharpened her pencils many times in eager anticipation. She showers her caregiver with kisses; while Pippi loves to be cuddled and held, she also relies on that closeness as a home base - she sometimes will sit in her caregiver's lap for a few minutes as if she is drawing in the confidence and courage to bound off on another adventure.
Because of her stable demeanor and trusting nature, Pippi is an easy keeper. She greets people and dogs with profound affection; in fact, at a recent Hedgesville Hounds picnic, Pippi circulated on her own, welcoming every dog, child, man and woman with a sweetness that was disarming (and sometimes comical). We were struck not only by her innate capacity to make appropriate overtures to such a variety of new dogs and people, but by the stunning manner in which she formed small, but very meaningful relationships throughout the day.
In fact, offering the paw of friendship seems to be Pippi's primary ambition in life. It is very endearing to watch her as she makes friends, and one is tempted to cheer for her when she is accepted into any group, so obvious is her elation at her little accomplishment. There is one dog in foster home who has consistently resisted her charms, yet, day after day she gently persists in winning him over.
Pippi will not accept that there is anyone in the playground of life who cannot be cheered by her presence, and although he steadfastly refuses her overtures, she sits near him, and continues to search for the key to his heart.
While Pippi is clearly a social puppy, she is equally content playing on her own. She has become especially talented at catching droplets of water that cascade from the sprinkler.
Pippi is somewhat long-bodied at this stage of her growth, and her feet seem a bit too large for her little legs. We do not predict her becoming a big dog when she is fully grown. Her eye contact is full, direct, and soft. Her ears seem to have chosen two different directions for repose - one rests out to the side, and one flops forward.
Pippi is a remarkable puppy. She is well adjusted, well socialized, and she has no special needs. She does have a special capacity to love, and her adopter(s) will find in Pippi a devoted spirit and greatness of heart.
