A man noticed something very odd twirling in the street while driving through downtown and stopped to investigate. To his amazement, it was a little puppy whose head was stuck in a giant pickle jar and who was in severe distress. He scooped her up and brought her to our vet clinic where the jar had to be cut open in order to free the puppy's head. Fortunately, she was not seriously injured, but she was extremely traumatized. How very sad that a little puppy living on the streets could get so desperate that she tried to lick the bottom of a pickle jar.
Pickles (the silly name just seemed to be appropriate) was lucky enough to find a spot in a foster home where she is learning to be a puppy. On her first day, she crouched in the corner and snarled and growled at the other dogs and cats while being very leery of her human caretakers, but it did not take long for her to realize that she was now safe and that no one wanted to harm her. We are working on teaching her good manners and she is doing quite well with housebreaking; she is now playing with the dogs, is great with the cats and loves her toys. She is also not a destructive puppy, so far she only chewed up some papers that were left on the coffee table, but leaves everything else alone.
Pickles will require a home with a fenced-in yard, at least one other dog and someone who has a lot of patience. Although she is doing much better, she has suffered through a very traumatic event and will initially be timid and shy; therefore, she should not go to a home with children under 12 years of age who would overwhelm her. In the right home, this very pretty little girl will grow up to be a wonderful dog and a fantastic lifetime companion.
