My Story

My name is Penelope and I am a Bull Mastiff, Great Dane mix. My story is very sad to tell, but I have to tell it to help you understand me better. I was dropped off at the night box at a animal facility and left there to be transported to a shelter. People came to look at me, but when they realized how much work I would be to become beautiful again they decided not to adopt me. I was very sad in my kennel, even though the shelter staff was very kind to me. But that was all about to change; you see my foster mom say me on their website and was furiously trying to save me. So when everything else failed to meet mom's standards for taking me she came to get me. When she actually seen me in person she was shocked. My mom cried a lot when she looked at me that night. I am only three years old and I have been through a lot already. I don't remember being in a house before or getting food everyday. It is a wonderful change. I went from 108 pounds to a 121 pound girl. But my mom's heart sank to find out I am heartworm positive---what ever that means. Also I had a lot of hair loss and with my scratching she thought I was going to end up hairless. So after a round of antibiotics for my numerous skin conditions and Lymes disease I was feeling great. Mom says I have to start my Heartworm treatments soon and then I can get spayed and my hematoma removed too. Mom says I have had puppies of my own, but all I am now is a puppy and don't care about that anymore. I would like to be the only female, I don't tolerate smaller animals very well they just annoy me, but I love to play with males as long as they are laid back and I am Queen Penelope. I am a huge love muffin and love to be loved. I am timid around kids so mom is working on that with me. We are working on leash training, can't understand why I can't go where I want. If you are interested in me and have some patience for me since I still have to go through heartworm treatment and spaying.

Pet Adoptions

Have you been thinking about adding a pet to your family? Why not save a dog or cat in need of a home by adopting from the St. Mary's Animal Welfare League?

All of our animals are spayed or neutered and up-to-date on shots. The adoption fee for dogs is $150 and cats is $100. This tax deductible donation helps to cover the cost of spaying/neutering, vaccinations, health checks and other medical needs. Call or email us to meet some of our wonderful animals. Please be patient as our response time may be slow. Our entire organization is run by volunteers. We have no paid staff, so we must return phone calls and emails around our full time jobs and families. We will be in touch as soon as possible though. If you do not receive a response in 48 hours, feel free to email us again incase your previous message was not recieved. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work hard to save the homeless animals of St. Mary's County!
