My Story

This puppy was named Ocho because she was the 8th puppy born in a litter of 9 puppies. The word ocho is the Spanish word for 8. She was born on 3/16/10. Her Daddy was a full blood 6 month old German Shepherd and her Mama was a mixture of many breeds. Lab/Shepherd. She is very nice when people give her treats and is happy to play with toys with other dogs. She is crate trained and almost house trained. She does use pee pads in the house when her mom is at work for long periods of time. Before the litter of puppies was brought to Second Chance Pets, they were not given their immunizations that would protect them from Parvo, Distemper and other diseases. When Second Chance Pets volunteers saw them, it was noticed that some of them seemed to have no energy and weren't eating much. After that, they became very ill and unfortunately, 3 of the puppies in the litter had Parvo. Ocho stayed at the vet's office on an IV for 3 days. It was touch and go for about 3 weeks because she didn't eat or drink anything. She lost a lot of weight and she couldn't even lift up her head. Then all of a sudden she made a drastic change and was determined to live. She started eating and drinking, walking and even playing a little. The vet says that once they have had Parvo, they can never get it again. This is not an illness you would ever want your puppy to have because it makes them so sick, it is life threatening and very contagious to other puppies. Parvo can be spread not only if a person or a dog is close to a dog who has it, but it can be blown into a backyard that is thought to be safe for puppies. It is extremely important to give all puppies their shots at age 6 weeks, 9 weeks and 12 weeks. Ocho is now healthy, happy and ready to go to her new furever home. She likes to sleep in people beds at night. She is crate trained and getting better and better with her potty training. She prefers to dine alone as she doesn't like to share her food or treats with other dogs. But she loves to play with other dogs. She will run and jump and play for hours. She has never been around cats, so it isn't known how she would do with them.
