Nico (Facing Euthanasia 4/15/24)

HELP THIS POOR SCARED BABY WHO IS GOING TO BE KILLED! We need a hero for this sweet terrified boy who is getting to stressed in his kennel and he is deteriorating and now is at risk of being euthanized. He is friendly with people but scared of the leash and other dogs, yelps and screams when he is scared. He clearly has been abused and hasn’t felt the love he should. He’s only about 1 yr old and he is still very much a baby. Will not approach other dog - actively avoidant. Will hide behind handler. -Uninterested in an aloof way /remains indifferent doesn’t engage other dog. -Yelped out of fear when other dog moved too quickly. Kennel Approach: -Nervous and shy but leashes and walks out well. Touch/Handling: -Softens with petting engages tester. -Moves away in a neutral manner. -Jumpy with quick movements - snapped at the leash when it brushed over his back without him knowing it was there. -Tries to climb into your arms for reassurance. Overall Behavior: -Not seeking attention/neutral/cautious, slow to engage, calm -Sweet boy with humans, terrified of other dogs Kennel staff have been working with Nico to get him to warm up. While he loves his treats and pets through the kennel, he becomes petrified of a leash. Today, they presented the leash to him and stated that he would “scream” every time it would touch him. They plan to attempt again at building confidence with the leash through positive associations, but he needs more time and energy than we can give him. He’s a sweet boy and with time and patience with someone who will give him that he’s going to be a very loyal and loving boy. No aggression at all shown more avoidant when scared.
