My Story

SEX: male WEIGHT: 5.3 kg / 12 pounds DOB : 2019-06-29 Nelson, along with 10 other small dogs, joined Mattie's Place from a backyard breeder that authorities were working with to remove 100's of dogs from the premise. Despite a difficult life, these dogs are all the very sweetest little beans you could ever meet. They are learning how to co-exist as companion dogs and are shy and reserved and still working through housetraining, but gosh, they are full of love and we are still watching them blossom each day as they learn to "dog". Though every dog will bite, there is zero aggression or any signs of anything mean with any of these dogs. They are tolerant of their new lifestyles in foster homes though remain independent. They can be the only dog or join a resident dog, though because they are all so small no dogs over 20 pounds in the home. The energy of small children would likely not bring them joy so 12+ kids only. Can they be around visiting children, certainly. Access to a backyard would be best as they are still not great on leash and prefer to potato over walking mostly and for continued housetraining access to a quick outside would work in their favour. They have all had their vetting brought up to date including spay/neuters and dental cleanings with extractions of teeth as needed. Each of these dogs will likely require more teeth to be removed in the next 2-3 years as their dental health start was not a great one, so keep that in mind for your adoption budgeting. Nelson did come to Mattie's Place with 1 eye removed that apparently was removed 3 years ago. He has been recently neutered but until that point did mark in the foster home, but he uses a belly band so there's no clean up. This beahaviuor should and is subsiding as he moves further away from his neuter surgery. He may however, require a belly band if visiting a new space post-adoption, just in case his instincts kick in. They will all require regular grooming, so keep that in mind also for your budget when considering adoption. With that said, though they are dogs that need to be groomed, I do not claim, endorse, suggest or hint at, that any of our dogs are hypoallergenic, low shed or no-shed. If you need a non-shedding dog or have dog allergies, please do not apply for them on that merit as I can't risk any of them being returned because they don't meet that ultimate expectation. If you have a home full of patience, kindness and compassion this little bundle of love might be a great fit for you Not cat tested, though I can't imagine them having any cat issues. UPDATE APRIL 23 Nelson is having some nervous poops indoors the past few days, when his foster Mom comes home from work but might have to head out again shortly thereafter. Since he's still working on housetraining perfection, it's to be expected that some days are going to regress a bit. FROM THE FOSTER: Nelson is a little angel. He is such a sweet, loving boy and I can’t say enough good things about him. He lives with me and several other dogs and is so great with all of them. He barely barks much at all at this point. He does bark excitedly when he’s anxious to get out of his x-pen in the morning or his crate when I come home from work. He stays in the crate when I’m at work and really does great overall. He initially had some accidents (I’m assuming from being anxious) but no longer does. He varies throughout the day between resting comfortably vs being up and barking when I check in on him with a camera, but typically seems to settle well. He settles amazingly at night in his x-pen that is set up in the bedroom, although initially he would pace and not settle as it was a new routine for him. He does great with doing his business outside for the most part, but it’s up to me to take him out regularly and wait until he does his business, as he won’t really let me know when he does need to go out. He does still very occasionally mark in the house, but likely due to the other dogs here. The frequency of this is improving since his neuter and hoping that will continue. He enjoys toys at times and enjoys the other dogs as well as enjoys his human. He follows me around the house so I have to be careful where I’m stepping! He will also approach me for rubs and kisses and seems content with staying on the floor as much as being up on the couch with me. He’s a good eater and eats meals twice a day. He may only have one eye but it doesn’t deter him at all! He’s such an amazing love bug and anyone will be blessed with him in their life. ----------------------- To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in his current &/or previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen. We also do not claim, endorse, suggest or hint at, that any of our dogs are hypoallergenic, low shed or no-shed. ----------------------- Adoption fee includes: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leash|collar, go home preventative based on season.
