My Story

On May 17, 2024 we took in via the NBSPCA two little dogs and several kittens from a situation where their owner sadly passed away. Moose and Lucy are chihuahua mixes (not bonded). Sweet little dogs, not ancient but they do boast an array of health issues. At 8 years old Moose's hips showed congenital defects which would have been painful. He was immediately put on Librela, Metacam and Gabapentin to see if that helped to ease his discomfort. He also has a 4/6 heart murmur, a skin infection that has been successfully treated and was overweight. Initially we were not sure of the prognosis for Moose and had been advised that this was a palliative care situation and quality of life was the main goal. It was complicated by the fact that he was in distress at losing his owner. He did not walk much, but started to enjoy rides in his stroller. Fast forward to now and Moose is a much happier dog. He has lost weight, which helps his hips tremendously. He is now only on Librela, once a month. Librela is a monthly injection by a vet. Moose has been in foster care since the end of June. He is doing well under his regime of monthly Librela and Metacam if needed between Librela injections, and continues to lose an appropriate amount of weight. He plays! His vet could not believe how well he was doing, although his hips will never recover. He will have to be on Librela for the rest of his life, which must be administered s an injection by a vet. We are now at the point of considering a permanent situation for Moose, for as long as he lives. If you could open your home to this little fellow with special needs and agree to provide him all the care he needs to maintain his quality of life for the rest of his life, let's talk.
