Mona will not be adopted into a family with cats.
UPDATE #4: 1/25/2008
Mona has completed her heartworm treatment and recovered her health. She has also gained some needed weight. Now Mona looks and acts like a healthy happy GSD.
Socially Mona has come a long way. She is very attentive and wants to please. Mona has learned to "Come", "Sit" and "Sniff" for treats. She especially enjoys playing with her toys, either alone or with human company. Mona likes the sofa for inside naps, playing or napping in the warm sun in the back yard and going for walks on lead.
Mona has enjoyed playing with the puppies in Mom's family room. She has a nurturing spirit and a warm loving submissive personality to her people. Mona will make be a good natured addition to her family.
Mona is now ready to be adopted.
UPDATE #3: 1/10/2008
Mona did exceptionally well with Part 1 of her heartworm treatment. She has been enjoying being a happy healthier girl. Mona has put on much needed weight and enjoys the pleasures and comforts of being a house dog.
This coming Monday, Mona has Part 2 of her heartworm treatment. After Monday, Mona will be ready to join her new family.
UPDATE #2: 12/14/2007
Mona is feeling much better now. She is smiling now! Several days ago I heard another dog barking, it was Mona....She was acting like a "Cheer Leader" while watching the other dog play. Now Mona is not a barking "Cheer Leader", Mona is playing! Mona will play with toys by herself or she will start a game with one of her foster siblings. It is so wonderful to see her feeling so much better.
This coming Monday and Tuesday Mona will have Part #1 of her Heartworm Treatment. This should help her to feel better than she has felt in a long time. I am so happy for this sweet German Shepherd Dog girl!
UPDATE #1: 12/5/07
It is no wonder that Mona has not smiled. She must have been in a lot of pain. When she was spayed it was found that Mona's uterus was full of cysts. Hopefully now she will be feeling much better. It was also discovered that Mona has heartworms. She will begin treatment when she has recovered from her spay surgery. Please check back for more updates on Mona.
Mona's Story :
Mona is a lovely Black and Silver female GSD. Mona was rescued along with Ginger from a Very High Kill shelter in Northern GA. Unless a Rescue can be found, animals in this shelter are euthanized after only 5 days with no regard for the quality of adaptability. What a shame it would have been to take the life of this precious German Shepherd Dog.
Mona was very thin when she was rescued. She rode quietly in the car on the trip to her new home in the country. She is enjoying having an abundance of high quality food, plenty of fresh water and the warm sun to nap in on cool days.
When Mona met the other dogs they came to greet her with wagging tails and licking her muzzle. Mona has a gentle Alpha presence about her that the other dogs were acknowledging.
Mona had forgotten what play is. She wanted to hide in the warm dry dog house on the porch outside of "Mom's" room and just watching as the other GSDs ran and played. Mona stayed in the dog house for several days only coming out to eliminate. She even wanted to eat in the safety of her house. Gradually over several days Mona began to venture from her house for longer periods at a time. She enjoys being the "cheer leader" when her fellow GSDs play "Shepherd Games". After several weeks Mona now joins in the games.
Mona is a serious German Shepherd Dog with a very gentle and nurturing spirit. When she came Mona was very sweet and gentle, yet there was sadness about her, Mona did not smile.
Despite her seeming sadness, Mona loves to be petted and praised. She wants to snuggle close and be loved. Mona is submissive to her foster mom and dad. She wants very much to please her human foster parents.
Mona seems to have led a hard and lonely life. She may have been used as a breeder dog. Mona has had puppies and may have recently weaned puppies before she was picked up by Animal Control. This may help explain why Mona had forgotten how to play and why she felt secure in the smaller space of the dog house and porch rather than the large fenced in yard.
One visible sign of Mona having lived a life where she had cruel treatment can be seen by looking at her teeth. All 4 Canines have been cut off about 1/2 way up and her front teeth were cut off at the gum line. Mona is a wonderful example of how many dogs have the ability to love in spite of the abuses of the past.
Coming in the house was a new experience for Mona. At first she was afraid of the smooth floors and the strange objects and sounds that surrounded her. She would drop down and crawl with a look of fear on her sweet face.
Thankfully it did not take long for Mona to become comfortable in the house. Mona seemed so appreciative when I showed her that one of the soft warm dog beds in my room was for her. Mona liked the dog beds enough that she has slept in each of them. If there is another dog in the bed she just snuggles down next to him or her.
Mona began to enjoy being in the house and after several days Mona started playing with some of the toys. It was so good to see her carry around a rope toy or play with a ball.
Mona needs to be adopted into a family where she will be loved and appreciated, living inside with her people. Her family needs to know and love the German Shepherd Dog.
