My Story

Update 12/6/09: Molly has blossomed into a playful, sweet, happy little puppy. Molly even managed to gain some weight and is now 25 pounds. Her first snowfall was so much fun, even though she can't yet stay out too long in the cold. Molly is so happy when you call her name, and generally comes when called. She sits and almost gives you her paw when being offered a treat. It's great fun to watch her learn to play with toys, with tennis balls being her favorite. Molly has learned to tolerate her crate, but much prefers to be with her people -- she spends almost zero time in the crate when her people are home. This is a bit of a challenge because Molly is not yet house trained, but she is getting closer every day. Molly has a beautiful face and a very shiny black coat and, although she loves her foster home, she would love to be home for Christmas.

Update 11/27/09: Molly, formerly known as Marsala, is a very sweet, submissive little girl. Weighing in at 21 pounds, Molly loves to cuddle, play with her bigger dog friends, and cuddle some more. She is a little timid when first meeting a new person or is in a new situation, but with a little affection and gentleness, Molly comes around quickly. She likes to try to get the cats to play, and even when she gives chase, there is no aggressiveness in her demeanor -- she's just trying to play with something closer to her size. Molly doesn't like the crate at all and we are working on changing that. In the meantime, Molly spends her day in a room with a gate when no one is home. She doesn't like to be alone, but she does manage to get through the hours she's alone without tearing anything apart. Molly is new to being in a house, so her house training is a work in progress, but she does try very hard to please. Molly is a very gentle soul who is thriving on love and kindness.

Marsala is one of Indigo's sweet babies! She is solid black and was born 6/17/09. She is gaining weight every day - as of 7/16/09 she weighs apprx 3lbs. She will be available to adopt at 8 weeks old - 8/18/09! If she is anything like her mother, she will make a sweet and very loyal dog. Please come and meet Indigo, and all her puppies at the shelter.

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $300 for dogs up to 6 months of age, $250 for dogs 7 months-5 years, and $200 for dogs 5 years and older. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip, and transport from Arkansas to Maine on a USDA approved transport with a Health Certificate. All dogs are quarantined 14 days prior to leaving Arkansas. All dogs will be tested for Heartworm prior to adoption. Almost Home Rescue will process your adoption. Applications can be found at www.almosthomerescue.net and can be e-mailed attention of Adele to wynne_ahr@yahoo for this particular dog. Click HEREto visit our site.
