My Story

Mitzi is a Wirehaired Dachshund mix who is estimated at 4 yrs of age. She weighed 21.7 lbs 6/9/03 before being treated for hookworms and whipworms; but, after eliminating these parasites, she increased to weigh 30.5 lbs. (The hookworms and whipworms were in the process of killing her. So she has escaped death twice--by worms and euthanasia.) She is 19 inches long from the base of her neck to the base of her tail; and her legs are only 6 inches long. These stubby little legs are 2.5 inches wide, topped off by 3 inch wide feet that turn outward. Mitzi has wiry hair (except for her smooth coated ears), so she always looks like she is having a bad hair day; but the good news is that her hair do is pretty much wash 'n wear. Mitzi has the longest eyelashes her foster mom has ever seen. She is a very affectionate little girl. Though she is "bossy" with a lot of bigger dogs, she gets along with all of those dogs in her foster home (ranging from 7 to 70 lbs.) as well as with the 3 cats there. But her bossiness with the bigger dogs has gotten her into trouble with some of the bigger dogs a couple of times because she doesn't recognize her limitations. Mitzi is good about cleaning up the dogfood spilled on the floor by others in order to keep her foster mom from stepping on these crunchies. Although there are low dog food dishes for the short dogs in her foster home, Mitzi often prefers to use the dog dishes set in a table for taller dogs. When she eats out of the dishes on this doggie table, she looks like a fuzzy lil' canine ladder. Mitzi seems to have taken up housetraining herself (following the lead of other dogs in her foster home) but probably will need some scheduling work and reinforcement on her housetraining once she gets into a permanent home since she has been allowed to free feed and freely explore 9 fenced acres all day in her foster home. When her foster mom is trying to weed flowerbeds, Mitzi get in front of her and rolls over on her back on the weeds to get her attention and affection. Everything Mitzi does from walking to running to cuddling to bossing to sleeping is cute and funny. And you haven't lived until you've seen a catepillar looking dog sleeping on her side dreaming of running! Mitzi is up to date on her shots, spayed, heartworm negative and on monthly heartworm preventative. Her adoption fee to defray rescue expenses and vetting is $110.
