My Story

Mindy, a 10year old 9 lb poodle girl came to our rescue recently and it is very clear that she has lived through absolute hell. We have faith, we believe in karma, we know every evil human will face judgment. None of that is good enough to make this right. None of that is enough to settle the stomach watching her attempting to walk. Mindy came with a story that she was born this way. What we have seen contradicts that entirely. Her eyes are hollow with the desperation of a creature long past being loved. Her skin is raw and full of bites and wounds. Her back paws are inflamed and painful - still matted. Her front paws are… gone. They are gone and Mindy is suffering. A dog who arrives to the shelter trapped in prison of their own matted fur likely is not matted for the first time. It churns the stomach to watch this and consider that this was neglect, as unconscionable as it is. And it boils the blood to consider it was far more nefarious and this was done intentionally. None of it matters at this time because we don’t have names, we don’t have locations. She has been in multiple shelters, but by the grace of God we have her. Mindy, I promise you. We will not rest until you are pain free and there is peace instead of desperation in your eyes. We will not rest until you can walk assisted, and maybe even run. We will show the world that a little 9 pound dog has more heart than the cowards who hurt you could ever dream of. Update: Baby girl Mindy got her desperately needed dental yesterday and has been getting lots of rest since. Our poor girl had the largest fistula we have ever seen! She must have been so uncomfortable eating food as it got caught in her sinuses due to the enormous holes in her gum line. The few remaining teeth Mindy does have are now clean, and her fistula underwent a major repair. We are praying the gums remain closed to give her improved quality of life. Continue to keep her in your thoughts. Life has been hateful to Mindy, and we are still walking with her in that darkness. Her only place of true comfort has been in the crib that was donated to our dogs. It has given her a safe space of her own ~ an enormous gift to her. Last evening we put her in the crib - a gift to the sanctuary that has been a lifesaver for the most abused ~ the most terrified. Mindy went from her panicked, dementia-like searching the room to resting comfortably for the first time. She melted right into the clean, cozy blankets as all pups should, and drifted to sleep. We are praying we make the right decisions for Mindy. Above all, she deserves to be at peace. Her new wheelchair should arrive tomorrow and we are so hopeful it’ll be transformative for her to be mobile again. Send her all the love you can and send us best wishes for wisdom!
