My Story

MIDGE HAS BEEN ADOPTED BY A FAMILY FROM TOMAHAWK, KY! THIS IS A COURTESY POSTING FOR A FELLOW RESCUER. FOR INFO ABOUT MIDGE, PLEASE CALL KIM PERRY AT (606) 483-2959 or email [email protected]. This cute girl was picked up as a stray on 4/2/09 and rescued by her foster Mom the afternoon of 4/10/09 after she had been spayed on 4/8/09. On 4/10/09, Midge weighed 26 lbs. and was estimated by the vet to be about 1.5- 2 yrs of age. Her exam revealed whipworms and a dermoid on the cornea of her right eye (looked like a small piece of skin which was actually growing hairs, ugh). She was treated with Panacur to eliminate the whipworms, and the dermoid on her right cornea was surgically removed 4/24/09. Standing 13" tall (at the top of her shoulders) with a torso measuring 17" long (from the base of her neck to the base of her tail) and having been divested of her intestinal worms, Midge weighed 28.6 lbs. as of 1/26/10. The pound had categorized Midge as a Boxer/Beagle mix, and her foster mom myoptically agreed with that breed mix until the professionals in the vet office pointed out that she is OBVIOUSLY a Boston Terrier mix. Her elongated torso had initially thrown off her foster mom. However, in addition to her [now plainly obvious] Boston Terrier looks, Midge's continuous rambunctiousness should have "LOUDLY" signaled that Midge is a Boston Terrier or Boston Terrier mix. Midge is a "study in kinetic energy." Her favorite tussling buddies in her foster home had been an 80 lb. Rottie/German Shepherd Dog mix and a 50 lb. Golden/Belgian Malinois mix, both very gentle dogs who have been placed. Since adoption of these two dogs who put up with Midge's aggressive play, the other dogs in her foster home have not wanted to "play" with her because it is too much like being under ATTACK. It would be nice if Midge were adopted into a home where there is a BIG GENTLE resident dog with whom to play when the humans are gone and with whom to snuggle for sleeping. It is important for prospective adopters to understand that Boston Terriers are BIG DOGS IN SMALL-DOG BODIES. Bostons are full of energy and need to expend it. Bostons usually enjoy a game of fetch and other play but also enjoy curling up next to their favorite people in a relaxed moment. Lively, loving, communicative, and protective, Boston Terriers make loyal companions and excellent watchdogs. If properly socialized, Boston Terriers love children but, as with any dog of the smaller ilk, should never be left unattended with babies or toddlers since their judgement is nonexistent. Dogs of Midge's size range are not a good match for small children. Many members of the public seeking a family dog think the perfect formula is "small children, small dog." That uneducated premise all too often ends sadly for the dog: Either the dog bites a child because he/she was hurt by an unsupervised child or the dog is crippled by the child sitting on them or some other action taken by a child below the judgmental age threshold. Either is a death sentence for the dog. Obedience training is always recommended for bonding and safety's sake for any new canine addition to a family, and this smart little girl should excel with gentle, reward based training techniques. Easily trained using positive reinforcement, Boston Terriers reputedly make wonderful obedience competitors. At the very least, Midge needs to be taught the basic obedience commands. Midge has shown absolutely no interest in cats when a few, limited introductions have been made in her foster home. In fact, Midge appears to be scared of cats--BIG OLE SCAREDY CAT ! On the other hand, prospective adopters should be aware that many cats probably would feel threatened by the quick movements inherent in Boston Terrier exuberance with life in general. Having been heartworm tested, started on heartworm preventative, vaccinated, and spayed, Midge is ready to join a permanent family to share her life, love, and memories for many happy years to come.
