My Story

Melvin is a gorgeous Labrador Retriever, who may be a purebred.. He is about 2 years old and weighs in at about 60#. He has a beautiful coat, shiny and soft. Melvin was a stray and was found to be heartworm positive—a death sentence at a kill shelter unless rescued. So, C.A.R.E.S. rescued Melvin on 4/2/05 and treated him for his heartworm. An expensive decision, but he’s worth it! Melvin will need to be relatively calm for several months, until he is re-tested for heartworm in 4 months, at which time he should test negative.

Melvin is a real joy! He is such a great dog! He bonded very quickly with his foster mom and dad—mainly mom. He knew a lab lover when he met her! He is a lap dog. He loves to cuddle in the recliner or on the bed. He actually is quite attached to his family, he doesn't like being left behind.

Melvin gets along great with other dogs and cats. He loves everybody—his tail is always wagging and he is not afraid of anything.

He always has to have something in his mouth. He has figured out the squeaky toys, so they don’t last long. He will play fetch or just lay by you and chew.

Melvin is houstrained and doesn’t particularly like crates. He thinks they are beneath him, as he doesn't think he needs to be crated. He does sleep in a crate at night.

If you’d like a great companion and a beautiful dog, Melvin is for you!

This dog's adoption fee is $300 (plus tax). This includes being neutered, being treated for Heartworm, current on Rabies, Distemper, and Bordetella vaccinations, microchipped with the HomeAgain microchip, heartworm medicated during the heartworm season (May-Dec), comes with a Gentle Leader headcollar, and is currently learning Basic Obedience commands and good doggie manners.

The first step in our adoption process is to fill out an application. If you'd like to have an application emailed to you, just let us know. If you have questions about the dog, please call C.A.R.E.S. after 6:00 p.m. or email us. Sorry, but C.A.R.E.S. will NOT return long distance phone calls--our money is better spent on dog food............Thank you!
