My Story

This cutie is Max, he is currently 1 year old & is a Morkie. He’s a local Ontario dog being surrendered to us due to having a condition known as “Megaesophagus”. VCA SAYS: it is considered a combination disorder in which the esophagus (the tube that carries food and liquid between the mouth and stomach) dilates (gets larger) and loses motility (its ability to move food into the stomach). When esophageal motility is decreased or absent, food and liquid accumulate in the esophagus and have difficulty getting into the stomach. Pets with megaesophagus typically regurgitate food and water. The pet should be fed in an upright position about 45-90° to the floor. This position should be maintained for at least 10–15 minutes after feeding. One option is to use a Bailey chair, which is specially designed to support the pet in the correct position (search “Bailey chair plans” online to find several articles and videos detailing how to build one). There are thousands of dogs that are living with megaesophagus and through the continued advancement of veterinary specialty medicine, these pets could be given a second chance at life. It is important for animal owners to understand how vital it is to seek out a Board-certified veterinary specialist for your pet’s medical condition when it comes to diagnosis and treatment. Now with regards to Max, he is already successfully eating and gaining weight by using his Bailey Chair (custom built for him). This will be coming with him. He needs to eat in it (as pictured below) and stay in it for 15 mins (in this upright standing position). He eats 3 meals a day beef based kibble (Acana) soaked in hot water then blended or wet canned food (pate only no chunks or shreds) works as well. He can drink water from a simply elevated pet bowl station and doesn’t have to be in his chair to do so. He likes to sleep with his neck pillow and it can help a lot too. When he gets excited or hyper he can spit up a bit. However, he will be going to our partner vet for a second opinion once we secure him in a foster home ?? He’s a gorgeous boy with a lot of life left in him and he just needs the right caregiver. He is good with people and other dogs, never been around cats but would likely be fine if they’re dog savvy friendly. He is leash-trained and house-trained. He is neutered, chipped and vaccinated. We prefer a home with no children as they could leave food lying around or small toys and this could be life-threatening for Max if ingested.
