Mandy is approximately 4 years old in these pictures taken September 27, 2008. She is a very sweet girl. Mandy is our special needs child because she has cutaneous asthenia. Mandy was dropped off at the shelter at about 4 months old, just thrown over the fence and left. She had many open soars over her entire body. The shelter kept her for two months trying to heal the soars but nothing worked. She went to a foster home at 6 months of age with many open wounds. The first thing was to take her to the vet to be sown up. It was discovered at the vets that Mandy has a genetic condition called Cutaneous Asthenia. Basically she does not have the connective tissue that attaches her skin to her body. It causes her skin to just hang on her body. Her skin is fragile and tears easily. When it does heal, the wound leaves a scar.
Mandy has many scars over her body as well as baggy places where the skin hangs. She is in great health otherwise. The condition does not shorten her life span or cause any health problems of any kind. It simply means that she needs to be kept in an environment that discourages rips and tears. For example no hiking in the woods unless it is on a groomed path because thorns and brush rip and tear.
Mandy has been exposed to many animals both dogs and cats. She is very gentle when she plays with the other cats and dogs. She is patient, very smart, and learns quickly. She plays very gently with tiny dachshund puppies and bottle fed kittens. Mandy knows to be careful and watch where she steps. Her favorite things are kisses and leaning against you just looking at you with those big brown eyes. Her heart is big enough for everyone. She is very gentle with kids as long as they know not to pull her skin. She loves to meet new people. Mandy walks on a leash and knows sit and stay. She doesn’t grab treats from hands, she take them gently. She loves to hang her head out of the car window; she rides well, and always wears her seatbelt. She occasionally barks and sleeps on the floor at the foot of the bed. Mandy is completely house broken and can be left in the house unattended for a few hours without destroying things.
