My Story

Mama and Papa were found wandering the streets together here in West Orange. They were clean, friendly dogs which told animal control their people should be out looking for them. Mama dog looked like she had puppies which (we hope) were recently weaned, and Papa dog wanted to keep the love of his life safe. Everyone worried about the possibility of puppies without their mother so the area where they were found was checked and rechecked, but no pups anywhere. Since the two dogs were clean, we were sure they came from a home. Maybe the happy couple had gone for a stroll …BUT, no one called looking for them. Hmmm . We’ve heard before that sometimes someone would keep a puppy, and ‘get rid of’ mom – but its unusual for it to be ‘get rid of mom AND dad’. So this is where we are today. At the shelter Mama Dog and Papa Dog were given their Rabies Vaccinations.. Then they went to the vet who estimated they were only about 2 years old. Papa weighed in at 71.5 lbs. and Mama weighed 65.7 pounds. They were given their Distemper and Bordetella Vaccinations. Their Heartworm/Lyme tests were negative, and they were spayed/neutered. Papa Dog was returned to the shelter the next day, but they kept Mama a couple days longer (because spay surgeries can be more complicated). Now they're ready for a new adventure in a new home. BTW - Both dogs try to keep their runs clean at the shelter, which usually means they’re housebroken. In case you're wondering - Mama and Papa are available for adoption separately, and don't need to be adopted together. If you have any questions, would like more information about Mama or if you are considering adoption, you can give us a call. Or, speak with an animal control officer through the West Orange Health Department at 973-325-4121. Best yet, stop by and take a look. The Township's Animal Control Facility (commonly called The Animal Shelter) is located at 311 Watchung Avenue, West Orange; and is open Monday through Friday 4:30 - 5:30.... .... (Occasionally additional hours can be made by appointment.) For more information give us a call at 973-736-8689 or email us at [email protected]. .......
