My Story

Update 4/20/09: Maggie Mae had a successful weekend visit to Camp Bow Wow in Portland, Maine, where she got a chance to socialize with lots of new friends, both human and canine. She was a bit of a wallflower at first, sitting quietly and watching while other pups hogged the spotlight in this busy new environment. She's back in her foster home today, happily running and playing with the other dogs.

Update 4/6/09: Although you may think Maggie Mae looks a lot like other black dogs, her personality makes her a one of a kind gem. She's a playful, outgoing dog who loves her toys and to play with the other dogs.

Maggie Mae has a medium energy level, meaning she'll need moderate daily exercise to stay happy and healthy, but she also loves to lay on the couch, particularly if people are there too.

She is learning to walk like a lady on her leash, and getting used to her new, red martingale collar. She is absolutely thrilled about playing in her foster family's fenced yard and has learned to ask politely, with a little whine, to go out. She's a speedy runner and should not be loose in an unfenced area, because her curiosity is likely to get the better of her and she's at risk to run off.

Her housetraining has come along very well and she has earned free run of the house. She doesn't "get" stairs yet and stays in the living room at night because she doesn't like her crate at all. Maggie Mae still has some nervousness about loud noises, and her foster mom believes that an adult home with another dog would make the best forever family for her. Update 3/22/09: Maggie Mae has figured out that it's really very nice to live inside a house! She's gotten over her travel weariness and she's confident, happy and adjusting very well. As you can see from her third photo, she loves the couch.

Update 3/15/09: Maggie Mae arrived here in New England 3 hours ago! It was a long road trip, but this pretty girl is delighted to be out of the concrete shelter pen she's called home for almost two years.

She has already proven she is very laid back and VERY smart. She was clearly scared when she came off the big transport truck, she was shaking and had her tail between her legs. But then she slept most of the way to her foster home. She curled right up and calmed down.

At dinner time she had dinner in a crate, gobbled up her meal, and asked for more. She has smelled her foster family's cats and just walked away. Her lack of interest surprised her foster mom, since Maggie Mae looks like she has some border collie in her bloodlines, and maybe a little hound. Of course we can only guess, but in any case, she's an attractive mix with short, soft hair.

Maggie Mae went for her first walk, too and enjoyed weaving and bobbing and checking out all the new smells. She'll need to learn to walk on a leash like a lady, as well as other basic obedience skills.

She is a great dog and someone will be very lucky! She seems quite shy at first, so very little children might not be the best fit, but she might do well with older kids. She also might just be overtired from the trip, and it might take a few days for her to bounce back. So stay tuned for more updates as she settles in!

Notes from our partner shelter: Maggie Mae is a 1-2 yr old Border Collie mix. She is sweet as can be, but shy at first, needs a little time to warm up. She is good around other dogs and has been in the shelter a long time, she is really looking forward to having her own home. This dog is in Arkansas awaiting a foster or adoptive home in New England.
