My Story

Maggie was surrendered by her former family after escaping the yard (multiple times) and breaking her leg. It has since healed and she runs on it just fine! Her leg is slightly shorter than the other now, which may make her get arthritis at an earlier age. She jumps up on the couch to curl up, but is also content to lay on the cool hard floor. She likes to lay in her kiddie pool sometimes, not the biggest fan of a bath but she will sit for it. She's not a drooler except when she just drank water so we only keep water bowls in the bathroom for easy clean-up.She gets along with the 3 other dogs in her foster home (2 small and lazy & 1 large and playful one), and has even been around calm rabbits but only supervised and between a pet gate. She chases the squirrels and cottontails in the backyard when let out to play (a habit probably picked up from her canine bestie) but leaves the kitties in the household alone unless they start feeling spunky - then she gets spunky too! Otherwise she's pretty calm and doesn't ask to go outside much, though she does like to walk the perimeter of her yard checking things out. She also doesn't jump on people, but if she's extra happy or playful, she may jump upwards to get your attention, but doesn't put her paws on you. She will step on your feet sometimes though, and she does like to lay across them when you're sitting. <3 She has been socialized a bit - lots of car rides (though she needs help getting in/out of vehicles most of the time). She's been to a couple local shops and let people pet her, and has been mostly accepting of new people in her home (fine with females, was a little iffy with a tall man but came around within a few minutes), and has let another new dog stay with us for a week as well. She was fine with males when out and about. She walks on a leash OK, does do some pulling sometimes if she's eager for something so needs a strong hand just in case (and training to improve if desired). She does not mind storms (and will go potty in the rain just fine) or fireworks one bit, but will bark at the fire trucks or loud engines that pass by. She is used to staying in a crate when the humans are away, as she gets upset when her people leave (doesn't whine or bark anymore, but will pace and find something to chew - and not always a toy). We have been using trazodone for separation anxiety and it has improved with time as well. We will be reducing the Rx after spay recovery to see if she still needs it. She also eats in her kennel in her foster home as she shows food aggression to the other dogs in the home, but not to her caretakers (we can take her food bowl if she doesn't want to eat or is finished eating). She takes her medicine with peanut butter right next to the other dogs with no issues, but high-value treats she has snapped at the other pups if they make a dash for one that missed on the floor in front of her. She takes treats gently even from strangers, and is oddly not very food motivated. She knows how to sit, but we haven't worked on other 'tricks' just yet. As typical of her breed, she listens when she wants to. :-D Before her spay she was using the bathroom outdoors as well as the pee pads in the house for one of the geriatric dogs, but we will be trying to move her away from those soon. Thankfully not too energetic and doesn't require daily walks or ball throwing. Rarely if ever plays with toys. She is a big loveable fluffball that will shove her head and chest into your lap to get a whole body rubdown! Maggie is microchipped and UTD on Rabies, DHPP+L, Bordetella. She got a Pro-heart 6 shot and spayed on 7/19/24. She was treated for intestinal parasites and heartworms and is now negative on both. At the time of spay she was 72lbs and wouldn't hurt to gain another 5lbs (was super skinny at only 52lbs when she arrived). To inquire about adoption, please email [email protected].
