My Story

In 3-17-09. This wonderful senior girl was rescued from the local kill shelter. She'd been impounded as a stray at large. She was wearing a collar, fairly nice one, with a western motiff... No ID... Collar's do no good without ID. Nobody came looking for her, and she was scheduled to be put down. The saddest part of this story is that some mistaken owner probably thinks "oh yeah, old so-n-so wandered off to die in the woods last week"... and never went looking for her!!! OLD DOGS DON'T DO THAT!!!! If you come away witho nothing else from reading this bio, know this. Senior dogs, like senior people, often become senile, disoriented, confused and easily spooked. She most likely wandered off, got confused, and was lost. Somebody, or Animal Control, picked her up and brought her to the scary, wet/cold shelter, where she became more scared and confused. The poor old gal doesn't have a clue where she is, even now that she's safe, and is taking her time to settle in. She is a dog that has never been in a house, as she's very nervous inside, although thinking that the soft, warm dog bed is the cat's meow! She much prefers to lay out on the porch and survey her surroundings. She does tend to amble off (my whole 10 acres is field fenced, she can't get off) and I can see where she may have wandered off an unfenced property and become disoriented. It is OUR responsiblity, as old dog owners, to keep them safe, just as we would a new, inexpierenced puppy. Shame on anyone who still believes that old wive's tale that old dogs wander off to die, this just isn't a reality. She is about 8-9 yrs old. Starting to slow down. Has some minor sight /hearing loss, but otherwise bloodwork shows a very health senior Cattle Dog, although her working days are over. She is excellent with other animals, including cats. She weighs in at 36#'s and 18" at the shoulder. She is just a lover. She won't cause you any trouble at all, and just wants a nice, quiet place to sleep and hang out with some nice, slower folks. A securely fenced yard, even a short fence(she won't jump one), will be required.
