ADOPTED 4-17-09, thank you Vicki of Ellensburg, WA! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~RETURNED 3-28-09. Adopters decided after 6 weeks they just weren't cut out to own a Giant breed puppy! Lulu Belle, as they renamed her, was WAY too much dog for them and they under estimated her "puppiness" and strength. She has gained weight nicely in their care and is up to 98#'s and still has room to grow. She is full of life and energy and LOVES to play with other dogs. We are reccomending a home with a LARGE to GIANT breed, young, active dog for her to romp and play with. Also someone with Giant breed skills and savvy. She is ALOT of dog, but very nice to be around, not a mean bone in her body and eager to please. She's just so very strong and doesn't realize how big she is. Remember, we are assuming she lived her short life on a chain, tethered to a stake, tree or shelter. Her neck is VERY strong and she is only just begining to understand how to "cohabitate" with humans inside the house. She thinks it's wonderful, but is still a bit dazed and confused. **************In 2-2-09. Rescued from a local kill shelter. She wasn't neccesarily in danger of being put to sleep, but the shelter was no place for this big mamma to be. She had been picked up running at large on the streets in Spokane. Animal Control officers followed her for several blocks, hoping she'd show them where her puppies where. It was obvious she'd recently given birth, as she still had icky stuff all over her back end and was FULL of milk (still is). She settled on the porch of a house, and officers knocked and poked around, but found nobody home, and no puppies were anywhere to be seen or heard. They left a notice on the door, and loaded big mamma up in the truck and took her back to the shelter. She sat there for 3 days, howling, barking and crying to get out and go find her pups. She is miserable full of milk and hormones and pining terribly for her missing pups. When I met her there, she'd gone on a hunger strike and had stopped eating. I was asked to take her home and love on her and help her get through this awful time. I brought her here, washed away all the filth, tended all her minor wounds (probably hit by a car) She was so thankful for the bath, almost relaxed and closed her eyes for a minute. She is also back to eating three huge meals a day. She is playing with the other dogs, and my little girl and only looks longingly into the distance once in awhile now. She is skinny, emaciated really, to the point where you can see every bone in her body, even her tail bones. She has a large rubbed raw area on her neck where she was kept tied, with a chain collar that AC had to cut off with bolt cutters, it was so tight. She has very little muscle in her hind legs, another sign she was kept tied and not allowed exercise. She has a bare spot on one rear hip, probably where she laid in wet, damp afterbirth in the cold, trying to keep the pups warm. Hard to say what happened to them. My guess is uncaring, cruel owners "did away" with the newborn litter and mamma broke her chain to go looking for them. I don't want to think about that... Let's just focus on finding this sweet, deserving, kind, huge lady a new home where she can make new memories and leave the past behind her. She is just wonderful with other dogs, cats, and kids. Only about 11-14 months old, full of life. She weighs in at 74.6# right now, and should fill out to 90-100#'s. She silly, playful and very obedient. She doesn't know anything, but has taken to the leash, jumping up into the truck and will almost come into the house without too much pulling. She's afraid of the hardwood floors! Doing better everyday! She'll be ready for visitors by this weekend and ready for a forever home as soon as she's spayed, after her milk dries up, sometime late next week.
