My Story

Dodger came to the shelter in late 2023, transferred from another shelter so that he could receive more training and volunteer attention than they were able to give him at that time. He is a fun-loving dog, likes to play fetch, but his problem is that he is “kennel defensive.” He was originally adopted from a rescue in California and, reportedly, was confined to his kennel for the entire journey. Is this what makes him so different in his kennel than he is when he is in the dog yard or lounge? We can’t say for sure, but what we can say for sure is that Caged Dodger is a very different dog than Liberated Dodger. Because once outside of the kennel confinement he is a very happy, friendly and playful creature and enjoys the companionship of several different volunteers, as well as animal control. But, unfortunately, at the shelter he must remain kenneled when he is not enjoying time out with his human companions. It will take him some time to get to know his new people, so a number of visits to the shelter to work with Dodger and his shelter people are advised for any potential adopter. He will still need training post-adoption to complete his progress from being a caged dog to cherished companion. Though Dodger likes other dogs, he shouldn’t be adopted to a home with small dogs or cats or children. A larger dog would make a good companion for him. He will also need a fenced-in yard. Dodger is 4 years old, is neutered, housebroken, current on vaccinations, tested negative for heartworm and Lyme disease, and received de-wormers and flea treatments. Adoption fee is $60. Personal checks are accepted from R.I. residents; all others may pay by credit/debit card or money order, payable to “Town of Scituate.” No cash is accepted. For more information or an application, email [email protected] or [email protected], call the shelter at (401) 647-7200, or visit the shelter during regular hours: Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri 7 to 11 a.m., Sat 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please call before visiting to ensure the shelter is open.
