My Story

Leo was discovered several weeks ago in a vacant lot, screaming in pain and totally unable to walk. He was taken to the local shelter where staff discovered a small dog who had been severely neglected and abused. Additionally, someone had poured a caustic substance over this little dog's back causing severe burns and hair and skin loss. Since the shelter is not equipped to deal with long-term medical issues they begged us to take Leo and help him as best we could. He was taken to our vet's office where he was sedated and shaved to the skin. In addition to his burns, Leo had a massive skin infection, ear infections in both ears and bruising. He spent the first week of rescue at the vet hospital being nursed back to health, then was placed into a special foster home where he would receive daily skin treatments. Leo's recovery has been nothing short of miraculous. He has gone from a dog with open bleeding wounds to a happy little boy with a lovely black and white coat just now beginning to grow back. Leo is by no means completely healed. He will require prescription food for an unknown period of time, frequent shampoos with a medicated soap, and check-ups with a vet. He will probably always have allergies and will need medications from time to time. We call him Leo the Lionhearted because when he came into rescue there were many doubts that he would survive. The fact that he has not only survived but has shown us that he's a loving, happy little dog speaks to his bravery and will to live. We know that Leo was someone's dog - he is neutered and housetrained, good with other dogs and cats and has excellent house manners. We will never know why he was treated with such cruelty. We do know that we've promised Leo he will never have to endure such treatment again. Please contact us for more information about Leo's ongoing care requirements and conditions for adoption.
